All Quiet From The Moyesy Neighbours

Not that long ago my football-watching had become more jaded than an aside from Miranda Hart - but that was before the Premier League got interesting.

We've become used to the Champions League dog-fight. You know - the one in which wannabes still wallowing in increasingly distant past glories get all edgy about scraping into a Chumps League qualifier in a far-flung town where they still point at aeroplanes.

The usual suspects are: Arsenal (invariably successful), Tottenham (always deprived by a distracted manager and a side-order of listeria lasagne) and Liverpool - not exactly walking alone but certainly jogging some way back from everyone else.

Occasionally Everton might loom in the distance, defying the relative evils of a small squad and a lack of funds to quite possibly out-perform the others - and still finish 7th.

Now a quick - and undoubtedly premature - glance at the table reveals a great deal of optimism for the perennial scramblers.

Arsenal, pilloried after losing to Villa first-up, have clambered neatly to the peak like a crack squad of Sherpas. Good stuff they've played too. Ozil is a delight and Ramsey a revelation. Flamini has stiffened up the middle of the park too.

Tottenham have been mighty entertaining too, without really steamrollering anyone. Paulinho and Erikson are terrific players and optimism at White Hart Lane is growing almost as alarmingly as the AVB comb-over. (There's still something a tad unconvincing about the Villas-Boas fist-pump, mind you. It's a bit, well how can I put this without sounding cruel... it's a bit Tim Henman.)

And of course Liverpool look way sharper with more teeth in their attack now the ungrateful little (extremely talented) shit has returned to their front-line. Suarez looked good even if he was up against the Sunderland defence. UN resolutions get passed quicker than Carlos Cuellar.

This is of course good news. All three of these teams could win the League this season. The Gunners are still a worry given that they have centre-back pairing of headless chicken and bumbling beanpole. Spurs might be the better bet - the squad looks stronger. And Liverpool's good health will depend entirely on Sturridge's hamstrings and whether Suarez can remain vegetarian. It seems unthinkable that Luis will be available for selection for the rest of the season but if he is... hmmm.

Of course, none of these teams have been impeccable, it's just that the usual top tier have looked pretty bleeding average. For all Mourinho's personal swagger he can't half put a dull team onto a football pitch. Quite what Juan Mata has done to upset El Uno Especialo is beyond everyone. Perhaps it's those goals he creates and scores with such regularity.

Chelsea's best centre-forward is at Everton. And it'll be back to Ba after Torres's nonsensical sending-off. Then again the girls' playground assault on the thespian Vertonghen - 'I'll scratch your eyes out!' - was so demeaning that the great Jessie shouldn't have been on the park anyway.

Manchester City oscillate from the sublime to the preposterous. It's like complacency is inbuilt there now. A Benteke-less Villa were a piece of piss - until they weren't. And the post-match comments stank of more conceit - we were brilliant, it was a joke we lost it, etc.

But the most life-affirmingly poor start belongs to Manchester United. Now I like Moyes. Who doesn't, really? But he's not only filling the biggest boots in football, he's doing it with the weakest squad United have had since Ferguson arrived there.

In fact if you want to know how good a manager the Govan Beetroot was you only have to look at United's current first team and remind yourself that they are the current champions. That's right SAF won the league with a creaking back four, no midfield creativity whatsoever and one of the club's highest-ever goalscorers in a permanent sulk.

Of course Moyes can be held accountable for his lack of purchases. You don't want to be in a position where you're grateful that Nani has renewed his contract. He's an inflatable doll of a footballer - nothing like the real thing. Fergie papered over the midfield cracks with a bit of Scholesy here and a bit of Giggsy there and the odd Ashley Young plummet. The only thing Marouane Fellaini has ever created is a roaring trade in afro wigs. They needed a Cesc, or a Sneijder.

United have not scored a goal in open play since the opening fixture of the season. Were it not for Rooney's much-improved form they could be rubbing shoulders with Holloway and Kevin Ball. It's pretty dire.

Some will say it's too early to worry about whether they'll miss out on Champions League footy next season. I dunno. If I were the average United fan, I'd be worrying my little Malaysian socks off .

In the meantime a small thought for Paulo Di Canio. The knob.

Is it any surprise that a man so interested in fascism should run the club like a latter-day Il Duce? The only thing to be said in his defence is that Ellis Short must have known this already when he hired him. Everyone else did. There are poisoned chalices in football right now the SFC job is more like a hot steaming bowl of plutonium-enriched effluent.

And the candidates aren't exactly jostling for position. Mark Hughes should be top of the list but Gawd help us if he hasn't actually got a job. Steve McClaren looks like he's off to replace the pitilessly sacked Nigel Clough (and seriously who else would've managed all that on no budget? Ri-bloody-diculous.)

You could imagine Alan Curbishley coming in - and let's face it, Alan, it's better than George Osborne forcing you to pick up litter every day.

There is one bloke who's not been mentioned but relishes a challenge.  At the moment he's busy looking for his eyebrows down the back of the sofa, but don't put it past ol' Colin Wanker to emerge from the managerial scrapheap. Even Warnock's got a tad more subtlety than Di Canio.

Whoever gets the job, I hope he starts planning for the Tees-Wear derby for next season. (That's if we stay up of course.) Cos Sunderland look more than somewhat doooooommmed.

PS No I haven't mentioned Southampton. Someone always punches above their weight and this season it's you. What do you want? A medal?

    2. Brilliant, AH. What I don't get is that Moyes has always been praised for his scouting at Everton, bringing in one or two mid-priced players every season and getting them to punch above their weight (well, maybe not Yakubu, but he's a big lad). You would think he would have had a couple of good kids on his target list that could have been had relatively cheap, if/when guys like Fabregas turned United down. Might also be a way to get the squad younger and light a fire under complacent veteran arses. You have to wonder if there's some backroom interference, as that was just a baffling, un-Moyeslike (or Moyesian, or Moyesesque) window. January will be interesting.

    3. Came to this oner late, but I was going to say don't forget Everton. Sad it takes a Red to do it with a back-hander! :)
That game against the Barcodes - we played like Brazil in the first half and Ecuador in the second. Needing a 4 goal win to go temporarily top on Saturday lunchtime, we could be top at half time, only to draw 4-4 with Citeh. Almost worth a punt.
You can say what you like about Dour Davey, and most folk are, but he was better for the blood pressure than Roberto, for sure! Still it's fun watching us these days, and we seem to have a feared forward line - can't recall that happening in aeons.

  3. In defence of Un**ed (I cannot tell you how painful that is) they have had a tough set of fixtures, whereas Ar***al and Spurs haven't.It's a little early to write them off.

Having said that, there is a good article in The Times today which essentially makes the same point as Robbo.Un**ed have had a poor squad for a while.Fergie's greatest act may well have been leaving before the shit hit the fan.(not a reference to the Cantona kick)

More importantly (for us non-Prem fans) what on earth have Derby done?

I've loads of Derby fans as customers and not one of them was calling for Nigel's head. They are all aware of the fact the board have no money to spend and they have slowly but surely progressed each season.

    Stupid decision.

  4. good summary robbo. SAF knew when to bale alright. speaking of bale i hear man u offered £120 million and it wasnt enough to lure him to the Old Trafford retirement Home for Past-It Footballers. They need a completely new squad and rooney knows it too. Nice to see and i expect to be enjoying my ABU schadenfreude all season. man c the new team we want to see fail but dont really expect to,. As for chelsea you're right Mourinho puts all his flair into media appearances and leaves his team to play with all the creativity and ingenuity of a michael owen article in the daily mail. spurs spent their money well, sparking arsenal into action. im convinced wenger would have settled for 4th again, but spurs look a good bet for top four so he had to ACTUALLY BUY SOMEONE GOOD ie expensive. its looking like the most interestin and open season in living memory and btw miranda hart tried out for QPR ladies and didnt get in

  5. Nice stuff Robbo. I agree about United, although they were never going to get Fabregas (some sort of noxious disease?), and Schneijder is past his best. 6. Clough's former staff at Derby have been placed on gardening leave. I though that was a joke when it happened to Phil Brown at Hull. Is this a British euphemism for being fired without losing your pay? In that case, how is it different from di Matteo at Chelsea?

    1. Is this a British euphemism for being fired without losing your pay? Pretty much. Their employment contracts would have had notice periods in them (either side to give some notice of stopping the job), and they've been given notice, and told not to turn up in that period.

I suspect Di Matteo was paid off for not working his notice period (the cost of sacking managers in Chelski's accounts has been pretty high over the last 10 years). Slightly different legally, but same sort of effect.

  12. Excellent blog Robbo. I've been giving Fergie begrudging respect for the last two seasons because he was polishing a turd. That squad is very poor, but was disguised by his abilities to make them greater than the sum of their parts. Now he's gone, the squad is exposed for what it really is - a pretty raw goalkeeper, an aged and creaking defence, a shite midfield, and two star strikers, who don't like each other. Add to that expensive but crap squad players like Jones, Smalling, Buttner, Anderson, Nani etc, and a couple of young International players who are not even Premiership quality, but because they play for Utd, they get in the England squad (Wellbeck and Cleverley), and you can see why players aren't desperate to play for them anymore. A lot depends on how much time they give Moyes before they either wheel Fergie out again or go for a star name manager. Or keep Moyes and miss out on Europe and all the debt-repaying revenue that comes with it. Utd only care about their brand, and so if that suffers enough, then they'll make changes.

Personally, I think Di Canio was only brought in to save Sunderland from the drop last season. They needed a kick up the arse, a bit of enthusiasm and discipline and it worked for them. Having kept them up, they couldn't really sack him, but surely he was never a long term prospect? I don't understand why they allowed him to make such drastic squad changes over the summer though.

Lukaku and Barkley saved me from an absolutely shite week in the FFL. They improved it to just a shite week.

  18. On the Torres v Vertonghen incident.

I don't think it was harsh that Torres was sent off, he was on a yellow, had been bikering with the S**rs (fuck you anon) CB all game and went in like a raging bull, he should of known better, plus he should of been off for the scratch anyway.

Vertonghen should of gone too, he pushed Torres after the trip (yellow card), meaning the ref would of had to send him off after he took the Chelsea player who was clean through (on another day that could of been a straight red too.)

    ReplyDelete
  19. I'll agree with Jedi above that Sneijder is past it, he just hasn't been the same player since his injury at milan a few seasons ago, he can still do a job, but i'm not sure if he could hack it in the PL at this time in his career. I'll also concur that Man U were never going to get Fabregas, he had no intention of joining them, his agent played a dirty game to see how much Barca appreciated him and if they were willing to fight to keep him, he's literaly said as much since.

One thing I will disagree with is that we didn't need a player like Ozil, he was exactly what we needed. a high profile, world class signing to remove all the stigmas and give the whole club a boost. We've been missing a player of his calibre in that position since we lost Cesc, a guy who can change a game, one who operates on a different level, sees things that others just do not see.
Who else do we have in that position?

    Rosicky? Too injury prone.

    Santi? Prefers the wing.

Wilshere? plays deeper and is not exactly renowned for his assists.

Oxtail Chamberpot? Not quite ready yet, plus out for a few months.

I also don't understand why we would have needed Fellani, no disrespect to him, he's a very decent player, but we have ball winners in the midfield, Arteta, madman Flamini and Ramsey who has more tackles then anyone in the PL so far, at a push Wilshere can play there too.

We needed a striker, we missed out on Higuan and Bitey O Toole, so the management agrees with you there. A CB wouldn't of been amiss, but with Mertesacker, Kosielny, Vermaelen and Sagna to fill those two spots (we're not L'pool who play with 4) I don't think we're in that bad shape.

As for the keeper position, Mignolet is a very good shot stopper, but is like a headless chicken if the ball is passed back to him, Begovic at Stoke isn't so hot anymore and neither are an improvement on what we have got. The only keeper in the PL that is better (IMHO) is Lloris, maybe Cech, but they\re not going anywhere.

    3. Not quite what I meant, H2. More that other positions had (or should have had) a higher priority than attacking midfield. Striker (preferably one who is allowed on the pitch more than half the season, so not Suarez) would be one.

I do agree (and said) that Ozil is a class above anyone else you have in that area. He's even got Giroud scoring freely FFS.

Not sure I'd agree about Cech: a few years ago, yes. But why look only at the PL?

  44. Good blog Robbo. " If I were the average United fan, I'd be worrying my little Malaysian socks off . ", great line.

H2, it seems as though Ramsey is determined to make me eat my words. A very impressive start to the season....not convinced he's the real deal yet.

    1. Real deal?
I Ramsey may rank somewhere between Viera and Henry, if he continues with his attitude and hard work.

      Not much pressure, is it?

    2. I'd rank him somewhere between Savage and Chamakh.

    1. BTW Bo,

I missed the game today. The only other game I missed this season is the Aston Villa one.

Hope you are having a splendid time.

    2. The connection stayed open Spit but the speed was too slow for the streams. Having a great time mate.

Jack Wilshere...he smokes when he wants

  48. There's now a 17 ft statue of Zidane nutting Materazzi in Doha. Interesting precedent. I look forward to the immortalisation in bronze of Rooney shagging a granny and a colossal statue of Wilshere outside the Emirates dragging on a crafty cig

  49. Worst FFL week in my history. Didnt even manage to beat Average. 3 weeks in a row losing both H2Hs. At to add insult to injury, actually lost to a Bolton supporter.

    1. Yep, I had a shocker too, mate. RVP has had his last chance and is getting traded to free up some cash.

    2. woohoo, did I beat last season's Champion? I'll have to check that.

Blog, are you off to Jamaica?

    3. Beat is an understatement Trotts. You scored almost twice as much as I did. No doubt, a week or so from now I will find that my entire squad has been injured while on international duty.
