A Helluva Hull-abaloo

Sometimes the Premier League appears to be a rattling can of insanity. Managers last minutes, millions change hands, defenders are cannibalised, but it really is a vicar’s tea party compared to the Championship.

It’s a tawdry and patronising cliché to say that it’s the most difficult league to get out of – Wolves didn’t find it hard to leave, did they? But my God in heaven, there was a snake-pit full of twists and turns on the last day.

First thing to say is if anyone still has doubts about the fairness of the play-off system then please close your dim-witted gob now. The play-offs keep mare teams interested, more fans on the edge of mental breakdowns; they simply make the end of the season better.

I was surprised that Hull got the second promotion place to be honest. All right they had a comfy Cardiff to play (Man U’s performance v Chelsea proved what a lot of edge can be lost if you’ve nowt to prove anymore) but they’d been abject in their last three games. They couldn’t aim without shooting themselves in the foot.

Watford, on the other hand were up against a Leeds team with nothing to play for and they had everyone’s favourite Italian as their manager. He’s such a nice man, Gianfranco. Last day shoot-outs require calm heads on the pitch too. Zola had two who were anything but… the lad who came on as sub keeper… well you just wanted to stick him on a South Sea island for a couple of months so he could forget that the rest of the world exists.

As for Troy Deeney, that sending-off was ridiculous – a Scholesian runaway shopping-trolley of a challenge. It was so bad, even Gianfranco couldn’t be nice to him. Even then Watford could’ve stumbled past Hull who, in an attempt to recreate the impossible drama of Brentford-Doncaster the previous week, contrived to miss a penalty and almost instantaneously conceded one at the other end.

But eventually Hull – and Steve Bruce – fell over the line like an exhausted pensioner finding his seat after having run for a bus. And Watford must go again against Leicester.

If that wasn’t enough, Huddersfield, Barnsley and Peterborough played out a ladies excuse me for the last relegation place. Wolves confirmed their departure in meek fashion – I just don’t know what the hell Steve Morgan and his board are doing there. Saunders has got the bullet this morning. Here’s a manager who took a team down last season getting appointed this year so he could the same.

Colin Wanker must be lined up already. He’ll get them promoted, fuck everyone on the board off, and get told to leave too. It’s a bleeding shambles. If I was a Wolves fan, I’d be livid.

Any road, Peterborough ended up holding the bomb when the music stopped, not least because of a dreadful decision to award Palace a free kick in the last minute that led to the decisive goal. But the fact is the teams fighting for survival all had quite a stack of points. Boro, near enough top on New Year’s Day, have ended up just five points above the drop.

All this after 46 games. It’s bloody exhausting. Them Premier League boys just don’t know how cushy they have it. Attention turns to them again now (if we overlook Brentford’s extraordinary stagger into the Div 1 play-offs – there can’t actually be a Brentford fan in the country who hasn’t gnawed his own arm off.)

We’re all presuming Wigan will beat Swansea aren’t we? It’s what they do. Except their defence has never been this creaky on a run–in. I haven’t seen such poor marking since I spent a day with a privatised examination board.

But if they do then we’re looking at Newcastle and Norwich as the first in line for the Championship slops. However, after using the marvellous BBC Predictor I have – reluctantly you understand – come to the conclusion that Sunderland will be helping Di Canio reacquaint himself with a lower league.

For one, they have no one left who can score a goal unless you imagine John O’Shea’s going to poach a hat-trick at White Hart Lane. For two, I just have a feeling that Southampton will beat them at the Stadium of Plight.

This in turn will save the skins of Norwich and Newcastle who will between them scrape a point at home to West Brom and Arsenal respectively. Wigan will do enough against Villa. All of which leaves Spurs, who will get a point at Chelsea tomorrow, edging out Arsenal for fourth spot and throwing Wenger’s future into fresh relief. That HAS to happen in the close season or footy journos have nowt to write about.

So that’s what will happen,m boys and girls. Unless it doesn’t. The one thing you can guarantee is that Wigan will be still in with a shout on the last day and North-Eastern sphincters will be tightened to the max. Curiously enough, I even think defeat in the FA Cup final will only strengthen the Wigan will when it comes to the league.

And no, they won’t win the FA Cup. The FA Cup final doesn’t do fairy tales. Portsmouth was a blip. So Wigan will have to save their miracles for the League again.

In the meantime I’m pleased that the rest of you lot have had to endure sitting on the razor-wire of end-of-season hell, even if Boro’s season has ended as if the whole club has been on a morphine drip. Onwards and upwards. I’ll be stoking the flames of optimism for next season. Tomorrow.

  7. Great blog Robbo, I for one would be very happy if your predictions come true. I'd like Wigan to go down, but think it may well be Norwich.

And a great season in the Championship. As I've said before, Wolves are my second club, and I think they deserve to go down for their mismanagement. Saunders was never going to be a good appointment. Their next managerial choice has to be a good one. I wonder if Curbishley fancies a League 1 job? The problem is that they pissed off most of the other people on their shortlist before appointing Stolbakken. It may be a few years before they get back up.

  8. good stuff Robbo. It was indeed a roller coaster. Last year staying up until the crouch dive for a penalty, this year going into the play-offs until a last gasp goal from Leicester, hard to fathom but that's why we love this game.

I only have two more hopes for the season and as none of the others came true these probably won't either. The Geordie French Foreign Legion to get relegated and Wigan to win the cup. Oh, and Chelsea to win that Europa thingy and finish 5th!

  9. Wolves should've got rid of Mick when they stayed up on last day against Blackburn, 2 bad seasons with Wolves & took Mackems down, Championship his lot,
Agree with you Noel, peeps might not be putting there hand up for it, although a certain young Ferguson might.

  35. Much as it pains me to say it, Fergie is/has been amazingly successful and not sure anyone can surpass his record - either with troffys or length of service.

My first thought was of dread that The Yummy One will by pass us and go to OT, and if I ever want to believe in anything that R*f* says then it was his not so subtle hint of Mourinhos return.

Personally I would be hugely surprised if Man Poo don't already have a replacement lined up as they are not run my an egomaniacal Russian who seems to fire & chose managers on a whim - (and, yes, I am very aware without his money we would not be where we are now)

Is it true though as a retirement present Fergie will get a watch which adds 4 mins on to every 90 minutes?

  43. Farewell Sir Alex - and to all those insulting him, I bet you wish he had been managing your team!

Bells, I hope you get the Special One 'cos you deserve something better than you have had lately and I really don't think he is the man to replace Sir Alex. Is Moyes? Who knows, I just cast my mind back to the years after Sir Matt and how long it took to get a decent replacement and I am concerned. Not that it will stop me following the boys, just that maybe we won't be as successful.

In terms of succession, I can only think of one case of two really good managers following on at a club - Bob Paisley following Shanks at L'pool. The talk at the time was that Paisley had been the power behind the throne for years anyway so there was not much of a change. Does anyone else have that memory? I know there are plenty of old-timers here who remember that far back.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Arsenal will finish in the top 4 for sure now. ;)

I know you posted this before the Swansea game, but I was sure before then, and still am, that Wigan have now finally been found out. They have been riding their luck for years now and the tide has turned. Yes, they play some nice stuff, but even if they do score more then their direct fellow strugglers their defence is holier then the pope, add to that their propensity to the absolute Keystone at the back four and I believe it will all end in tears for Martinez.

All you need to know was there to see in their game v Sp*rs, the first goal they conceded was as disastrous as it was avoidable, the second, Sp*rs equalizer was in the very last minute conceded from a free kick that was, putting it mildly, extreamly harsh, their luck has dried up. Yet through it all RM keeps smiling, being up beat and optimistic, Likeable as you are sir, I think their time is up.

They've got the cup final to play over the weekend and then on Tuesday they'll be up against a well rested Arsenal (having not played since QPR) who are admitedly not firing on all cylinders, but are one of the form teams in the league, with believe it or not, one of the meanest defences in the PL.

The F.A cup run, as nice as it is, will be the nail in their coffin, they haven't got the squad to deal with three games in just over a week and their experience in avoiding the drop was all attained when that was the only thing they had to do, fighting on two fronts is a hell of a different story.

Right, got some catching up to do.

"David Moyes must win silverware early on at Manchester United or he runs the risk of suffering the sack for the first time in his management career, according to Sam Allardyce"

Not all all bitter or envious then ...

  73. From the little I’ve been bothered to read about the whole subject, it seems the universal opinion is that Moyes is the perfect replacement for SAF, I personally can’t work out why this is. I’ve never understood the whole love in for a manager who has basicaly achieved fuck all. I mean, honestly, what’s he done? A top 4 finish and an FA Cup final, fuck me, ‘Arry did that too, but he managed to win the FA Cup and actualy get to the CL proper. Take a look at Moyes’ record against the top 4, I think you will be surprised to find that this “astute” manager has never managed to win an away game against any of those teams, not even a jammy one.

The way he’s (DM) been fawned over the last few years you would of thought that he was manager of Barnet and not one of the, at the time of the PL breakaway, so called Big Five, for our younger viewers that was Arsenal, Manure, L’poo, LWC’s and yes you guessed it, Everton. He never punched above his weight, unless you consider finishing above L’poo once or twice as success. Where are the cup wins, where is the european pedigree, where is any evidence that he has what it takes to take over probably the biggest job in English football?

I for one can only see this ending badly and I’m extreamly happy about it.

Unless teams are prepared to give managers a chance, where will the next generation of decent managers come from?

      Delete
    4. That is a valid point and as long as he builds on the success at United. He is a good manager just worriesone that he has never won away at a top 4 club or won a trophy but time will tell and we'll give him support and the benefit of teh doubt.

Fergie generally gets most things right

      Delete
    5. I think he's done well with limited resources. He hasn't had the funds that all the teams above him have had and has sold on all his best prospects and players. Totally different set of circumstances at ManU (unless his brief is to turn them into a feeder club for the big boys) but it'll be about his man management which seems to be well respected albeit against a back-drop of different expectations. He has as good a chance as anybody at following Fergie and a better chance than most of making a long term go of it.

    6. haha he's like saf's soft cousin. like saf he comes from glasgow..the posh bit. like saf he supports labour - backing the wrong man andy burnham. like saf he fell out with rooney, but sued him through the courts what real glaswegian would do that? like saf he owns a racehorse, a rubbish one and like saf he's heavily involved as a member of the management committee of the League Manager's Association, of which SAF is Executive Board member and Trustee. he's succesfully achieved promotion with Preston while saf has won everything under the sun with man u including wimbledon, the tour de france and the Ashes

lets hope the early indications that hes a pale ginger immitation of the genuine article prove to be true. hope so.

    Not really.

You could of indeed had said who the fudge is Arsene Wenger and what are his credientials for taken over a club like Arsenal, although even if I hate to admit it, we were neither then or are now a club as huge as Man United, ironicaly it's thanks to Wenger that we are even mentioned in the same breath as Utd nowadays.

The difference is that we all now who Moyes is.

  78. As for recources, I'll give you that he's done well, but to say he's had less then all above him is not completly true. Arsenal have lost just as many star players, better ones even and we're still above Everton, with less of a net spend (throw back to the infamous Tommy O) and have built a new stadium.

  80. Arsenal got rid of players because they wanted to, they've stuffed the coffers and stuck with their wage policy as a priority over winning anything. Everton have got rid because they needed to. Both have been financially prudent within their respective circumstances but their circumstances are very different. Arsenal; global grand, 60,000 at every game, won fuck all for years, make loads of dosh for shareholders, can afford to compete at the top level but chose not to. Everton; second team in Liverpool, not much of a global following, half the gate, won fuck all for years, bleed Bill Kenwright dry, can't afford to compete.

  81. If you want someone who has done reasonably well with relatively less money than the biggest sides in a given league, then Moyes fits. He hasn't won in Europe, but he hasn't had the same (number or quality of) players available to him. Villareal went undefeated in the CL the group stages and lost in the semifinals they year they knocked out Everton. Okay, they never won a UEFA/Euro Cup trophy, but at least they made it through the group stages despite their poor starts. (Wonder if their poor league play related to being in Europe, and once knocked out, they climbed the PL table. Again, squad depth comes in.)

But if you want someone who has done reasonably well with lots of money, Mourinho fits the bill better. He had more money with Porto, more with Chelsea, more with Real Madrid...

Moyes will be fine in red, as the structure in place would be enough to finish in the top four with any of us at the helm.

  85. Is the appointment of Moyes the worst example of powerful old fart appointing as successor someone who reminds himself of a younger version of himself since dubya bush?

even Fergie must realise what a crap manager his pompous son is so Moyes is next best.

It never works, you know. Mourinho is massively more talented and should have got the job.

Its like nani for ronaldo or new fat, real rooney for old genius imaginary Rooney or Louis Napoleon for Boney, about whom Marx remarks in the 18th Brumaire of Louis Napoleon - history repeats itself first as tragedy, then as farce.

Moyes, Ferguson the Lesser, is likely to be remembered as a failure, a pale ginger imitation.

I admit there's a fair degree of wishful thinking in that statement, but without question, Moyes is untested at the top, so like H says, it does look more of s risky appointment than the meeja is saying.

  86. I think a demon sat on Fergusons shoulder and urged him in a whisper to live out the repetition of eternal recurrence, in a delusional attempt to recover his forever lost youth.

  87. he's on a hiding to nothing. He either wins two trophies a year or he won't measure up. Difference is he'll stick at it and won't chuck his toys out the pram and piss and moan to the media like Mourinho does. Getting Maureen would be like starting on a roller coaster ride with Docherty, Atkinson, O'Farrell, McGuiness and Sexton (not in that order). Moyes appointment is less entertaining for the rest of us but a good move for the Mancs. I personally would have liked them to give the job to Wazza's hooker, a nice lass from Bolton.

    1. I fully agree Trotts.

What will also be interesting is the reaction from the fans when things don't quite go their way.A lot of them have only ever known the Fergie years and weren't around to see teams like Ipswich shove 6 past them (March 1st 1980.We missed 3 penalties as well.)

SAF has been the difference over the years, the extra couple of points to see them over the line.Wonder what they'll all do if Un**ed return to the level of mere mortals.

As for Maureen,he's obsessed with himself and is a destructive manager. He may win things in the short term, but when he buggers off he leaves behind him a knackered football team.If he'd stayed at Chelsea he could have had 3/4 more PL titles plus at least 1 CL trophy.

What odds Wigan beating Arsenal on Tuesday (where is Col,) I wouldn't mind a small flutter on them to win by 2 goals.

Fergie the fug is all but gone.... hard to forget. I don't see Moyes filling his shoes though. Moyes has done brilliantly at Everton with limited funds but it is a whole different ball game having almost unlimited fuds. The more expensive players bring bigger ego's and bigger problems with them and I am not sure he has the character to deal with them. Fergie will be on hand to quell any early problems, which may well help Un**ed but not Moyes. If Fergie has to intervene Moyes will lose the respect of the dressing room.
