The Tooth Hurts

You want a piece o' me? Huh, Luis? Do ya?

Well such a huge heap of disgust has been tipped onto the bugsy gaucho's bonce
that you could be forgiven for thinking he was being investigated by Operation
Yewtree. (The news that Rolf Harris may be in trouble too is almost too much to
bear - the phrase 'can you tell what it is yet?' will never sound the same
again.

But how much do we need to tolerate on a football pitch? Nothing escapes a Sky
cameraman's eyes.

Let's not pretend that footy used to have a noble heart. When I was growing up
the true villains of our beautiful game were celebrated, elevated to the level
of cult heroes: Bite Yer Legs Hunter, Chopper Harris - someone once called us
Roughhouse Robson and I didn't mind a bit (although in retrospect it sounds a
bit camp). On the flipside there was the exploitative attacker Francis Lee, a
man who tumbled like Nadia Comaneci every time a set of metal studs got within a
foot of his shinpad-less legs.

The fact that today's bad boys live in gated mansions and spend the tail-ends of
their careers buying their seventeenth sports cars and getting themselves
groomed for the role of pundit couch scatter cushions only makes them even more
contemptible.

Luis Suarez, though, eh? In the rampant dash towards notoriety Suarez is making
John Terry look like a choirboy. A cheat, a racist and now, a devourer of human
flesh. It's not as if that set of choppers isn't already rather dangerous-looking. You could certainly open your bottles of beer on his gob.

But biting someone. Actually chomping. Isn't there something in the DAngerous Dogs Act that means we're allowed to put him down for the sake of society?

I must confess the first time I came across him was his clenched fist as Asamoah
Gyan missed that last minute penalty in the World Cup after he'd punched a shot
off the line.  Lots of people were calling him ungentlemanly scum at that point.
Me, I thought he did what just about every other footballer in the world would
have done. Got himself sent off to save the team. The penalty was missed. He was
vindicated. Of course he was pleased.

Now he's been at Liverpool a while we have been really made more aware of the
man's qualities. It turns out he really is a quintessential piece of pond life,
save for the fact that his feet do quite wonderful things to a football. The
pass for Sturridge's equaliser wasn't football, it was Art. If he were an
employee of the Government he'd have had his funding removed long ago.

Suarez's handball to gift-wrap Chelsea's second was the work of a dopey and
inveterate cheat whose instinct is as much for the deceitful as the brilliant.

As for his fit of the munchies... Well, first of all it's worth taking time out
to praise the remarkable restraint of Branislav Ivanovic. The man deserves a
fecking sainthood. Most mortal men would have yanked a corner-flag out of the
ground and used the little nibbler as a hog-roast.

Suarez's apology - and that of his club - has been rapid and cringeworthy. After all, he's
bitten people before.

And the big question is not 'Why is Suarez such a cunt?' We need highly-trained psychologists and
animal-trainers to get to the bottom of that. The real question is: 'why would
Liverpool put up with such a twat?'

Liverpool FC is not the most rational place in the world. There's reason for a
sense of victimhood. The maltreatment of the memories and families of the 96
should never be forgotten. But even the exaltation of Benitez is less difficult
to fathom than those that seek to excuse the Montevideo Man-Eater. At
least his team-mates will be excused the indignity of wearing pathetic t-shirts. I expect they've been printed up already... A picture of Luis, donkey teeth splayed in a wide grin of triumph and a little legend beneath it saying; 'The Tooth Hurts! But Luis Is Innocent! '

But Suarez is not going anywhere. Ian Ayre has said that already. We just need
to teach him how to play nicely, he says (this habitual faller, faker and
foot-leaver-inner).

Some folk say that the great trough of dosh that the Premier League brings with
it hasn't corrupted the honest John of British football. But the retention of Suarez by Liverpool is down to 2 distinct factors: 1. He's very good at football; and 2. If they got rid of him now he'd only get bought up for less money than he's worth by some club with the morality of a mosquito.

So, ho hum, say Liverpool, we're lumbered with him.

But there comes a time when even the most talented and costly individual needs to be jettisoned, not cosseted. Surely. I assume that the FA will give him a Cantona-like eight months to cool his heels and, who knows, file down his canines.

In the menatime, never mind limp-wristed, ineffective, meaningless, fines, Liverpool Football Club. Show some courage, Koppites. Get shot of the great embarrassment. And breathe the pure clean air of righteousness. If you do, you won't be walking alone.

    1. good point that. look at snooker, cleansed beyond watchability. we need a pantomime villain and while theyre good enough to compensate for the collateral brand damage they get excused. joey barton just wasnt good enough in the end. compared with his sequence of atrocities a little playful nibble seems insignificant, he didnt exacly eat his brain with fava beans and a nice chianti. but theres something sneaky and insanitary about spitting and biting and we dont like it do we, el hadj jouf springs to mind. punch someone (prefereably john terry) in the face, fine thats manly, off you go, three match ban - compared with rugby footballers are like choir boys. except that celebration by andreas moller v enland in euro whatever now that was fucking unforgiveable.

    Oh.

  11. Good blog, Roughhouse. I imagine the 'we won't be able to sell him for much' argument hasn't even entered Liverpool's thoughts. He's their best player, simple as that, and so they want to keep him no matter what he does. They won't be able to attract anyone of similar quality to replace him without European footie next season.

This weekend has pretty much been the Premier League season in a microcosm - United didn't even play over the weekend, and their main competitors for the league fucked up their matches, handing the title to United. And then when Utd did play, RVP's goals won them the match.

Suarez bit an opponent on the arm during a game, unprovoked and given he has done it before, has bene done from racist abuse, diving and on Sunday stupidly handled the ball to hand Chelsea the lead surely it is time LFC jsut got rid of him

  16. Suarez's actions -- because they weren't spotted during the game -- might cost Chelsea Champions League football next year. You could argue that he should have seen red twice, but instead he goes on to score the equalizer, which leaves Chelsea only a point ahead of Spurs, with a much more difficult run-in (although now that United has already won the league, they may not be bothered when Chelsea show up). It wouldn't surprise me in the least, just as it's not at all surprising that LFC merely fined him. What a joke!

Seeing as him and Pep share the same agent (not in a snacking sort of way), he'll probably be off to Bayern for 40 mil or so.

  26. AH, I'm afraid I have to disagree, Liverpool have no intention whatsoever in getting rid of, what is by a country mile, their best player.

In todays world of YouTube and 24hr a day media coverage on football from everywhere you've heard of and some places you haven't, there is no excuse for not knowing a players reputation when purchasing said player. Admitedly Holland is not one of the biggest leagues on the planet, but this guy played for Ajax and they are a worldwide known brand. He already had a dubious reputation as an irratating individual, not the worst thing in the world, from his previous club, FC Groningen, but also as a bit of a cheat, A reputation that was more then compounded at Ajax, where he also bit a guy. Liverpool bought him knowing all this, why would they know suddenly feel the need to get rid of him?

    ReplyDelete

    1. H2, I'm not saying they are either definitely going to sell him or they are definitely not going to sell him. Who the fuck knows. I'm just saying that their saying that 'he still has a future at the club' means nothing. They could well have been waiting to cash in on him for a while, and now have an excuse and could well be setting the scene to get a good price.

As for why they bought him knowing he was a cheat ? Well, because he was a good investment, and everyone cheats (not my thoughts btw, just what I think LFC were thinking). I would think if they had known he was also a racist and cannibal, the sale would not have happened.

  62. FA reasoning for Suarez ban.

    http://www.thefa.com/News/governance/2013/apr/~/media/164A568A93784FE391CC1FDAB4D7313F.ashx

Suarez "previous" was NOT considered in 10-game ban (point number 22)

Point 81 in the Suarez reasons comes straight from the 'We'll be as selective as we like' school of thought.

FA written reasons (No58) cite the fact that the Suarez incident trended worldwide (they use italics to stress it) on Twitter.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hmmmm, less impressed with this line of reasoning. Surely the fact that he is a repeat offender (and for biting at that) should affect the length of the ban - it does for other types of foul play. And banning someone because of "trending" on twatter is both crap and open to abuse - think how many L'pool (or other big club) fans are on twatter - they could start a trend to have anyone's ban lengthened.

Not impressed at all with this as it seems to be PR spin as opposed to reasoned argument.

A Newcastle supporting colleague of mine predicted this might happen to them barcodes the day Pardew got the 8 year contract. Personally though, I think what happened to them was teh Europa league. You cannot play the EL with a view to winning it and the PL, unless you have a squad with the depth of a City or Chelsea. Gonna be fun watching the Toffees next year.

  78. I watched two matches last night... Reading v QPR and Arsenl v un**ed and have to say they both bored the shit out of me. There was more skill displayed and less errors made in the former.

As much as I admire Wenger I sometimes have to query the reasoning behind his substitutions. He takes off Rosicky (Arsenal's best midfielder up to that stage) and leaves Ramsey on????? Ramsey was worse than having a man short (we would not have given the ball away as often.) Ramsey was finally replaced with about 8 minutes remaining.

I have a better insight as to why Giroud gets so many games as Arsenl's spearhead now... his only competition is Podolski, a carthorse amongst thoroughbreds. When will we get some scouts that can recognise talent.

    1. Still think you have the advantage over Spurs for 4th place. Spurs have to beat Chelsea (who themselves are also playing Man U same week, so very interesting) while Arsenal have to play Wigan,QPR and Newcastle. It was important for you lot not to have lost yesterday and you managed it.

  86. Bo.

Not sure how many Arsenal games you have seen lately, but a couple of points:

Podolski is well off the pace, has been for thelast few monthes, he's been carrying an ankle injury which he will have surgery on over the summer, why the hell he was expected to lead the line was beyond me, baffling decision.

I don't get this Ramsey bashng, it's not just you, but for some reason he's the scapegoat for all things wrong at the moment, which to me seems extreamly unfair. If there's one player in our current team that always gives 100% and never hides, it's him. If you thought we looked short, then maybe it was because Feo did one of his amazing disapearing acts again, Theo Walk it, hardly broke a sweat until he thought he was getting pulled for OXlade-Chamberpot. Yeah he got the goal, but was missing for the rest of the game.

I'll agree that the gameon the whole lacked the quality that you would expect from a fixture between those two clubs, but to claim it wasn't as goodas the Reading QPR debacle seems a little far fetched to me, even the highlights of that game were dire. This was supposed to be the last chance saloon for these two teams, but it was a lifeless limp stroll in the park that looked like neither could give a fuck about, truly awful. I hope QPR are as shit as that when we have to play them next week.

  87. I have been guilty of Ramsey bashing meself in the past H, but I have to say that he has been doing pretty well lately, took a while for Wenger to realize that Ramsey is like Flamini, his real strength is not his passing or vision, its harrassing opponents and trying to win the ball back, which he has done very well lately,

I do have agree with Bo on the Rosicky substitution, he is the most creative player we have left and he can run with the ball better than any midfielder in the PL, which is something the opposition hates, but Wenger does not trust his legs to last beyond an hour. I think he is being over protective as he was not showing any signs of tiredness. Even though we wanted to win the match, Wenger shoulda taken off one of the useless forwards for Wilshere.

Yes I was unsure about Evans, with his baggage, but then what do I know
Went to the NY stadium once at Xmas and I was impressed, talked to a few officials, who talked of future plans, then there was a dip in form, stupid losses when it should have been sewn up long ago, in the end dont know how we finshed above Vale
Maybe next season I'll get there a few more times when I retire this summer

  89. H, I said at the beginning of the season, that much as I liked Poldo, when he was at FCB and Koln, I think he was prone to injury and would struggle, Giroud and Cazorla started off brightly but generally should have done better, Injuries to Arteta and Wilshere were damaging and the other potential big names didnt always play to their game. Rosicksky starting to play well but get rid of Ramsey.

    Still 3 games to go

  93. I tried to reply to your comment H2 but couldn't get it to work.

I haven't seen many games this season... lack of Internet access and Arsenal games not being covered by local cable.

For me the Arsenal match was no better than the reading v qpr game (less mistakes by both teams in the latter match.) You are correct, the Reading game was dire but so was the arsenal game. Arsenal lacked the commitment and intensity you would have expected from a team fighting for a top four spot and Un**ed played like the team that just won the championship and wanted the season finished.

I agree with you about Walcott, apart from the goal he did fuck all...but at least he scored the goal. I am bashing Ramsey because he played worse than shit. Almost every time he got the ball he gave it away. I was hoping he would be red carded (although I don't think he plays with enough passion to ever do anything to be sent off,) at least then we may have retained the ball more. I honestly felt Ramsey was the worse player on the pitch and when Wenger removed rosicky, who I felt was our best midfielder to that point, I again had to doubt Wenger's reasoning.
