QPR - Quite Properly Relegated

(With apologies to Chris Charles)

So the hopeless hoops have plummeted down to the Championship.

Reading v QPR’s game on Sunday was the equivalent of a bunch of lads doing half-hearted keepy-uppies in a funeral cortege. Reading’s players were given more sympathy and that was almost right. Apart from the strange handling of their only saviour Adam Le Fondre – there was a period in the season where Adam was wandering around Berkshire supermarkets converting mineral water into Pinot Noir and reviving the sick – you can’t imagine there was much else Reading could’ve done to survive.
McDermott - still, I think, cruelly dismissed – created a strong team ethic that sustained throughout the season. The players simply weren’t good enough and the Reading faithful probably know that. In other words, they’re the polar opposite of QPR.
Rangers were simply a hired gang of mercenaries with no leader. The movie Wild Geese springs to mind. Loftus Road was a bit like a trashed South American economy where, if you were able to get in there quickly, you could make an awful lot of money with an equal lack of effort and get out of there before anyone really noticed you.
Here’s the squad that Harry had…
Green, Cerny, Murphy, Julio Cesar, Traore, Samba, Hill, Yun, Onouha, Bosingwa, Da Silva, Ben Haim, Magri, Diakite, Derry, Park, Taarabt, Wright-Philips, Granero, Jenas, Hoilett, Townsend, Mbia, Johnson, Mackie, Bothroyd, Remy, Zamora.
I’ve highlighted the ones who looked like they could give a shit. The others played in a state of permanent constipation. Hopefully, one of the facts that has been confirmed from this season is that Mark Hughes is a dull uninspiring manager - about as Sparky as a matchbox in a rainstorm.
Secondly, it seems obvious that high wages and a random collection of greedy people do not a football team make. Unless a Mourinho gets hold of ‘em, they won’t get too interested. Chris Samba may bleat all he likes about unfair criticism but the fact is that on £100K a week he should be playing better football in a better team.
Redknapp shouldn’t be getting away scot free. I think the wily old goat saw the great vacuum in the soul of the playing staff and flagged it up early doors, but these are not – on paper – poor players and you might ask why Harry’s record with them is no better than Hughes’s.
At least H is staying. But now begins the process of yanking various noses out of the west London trough and pointing them in the direction of less superior slops. Fernandes insists that he won’t sell anyone the manager wants to keep – an empty pledge when that probably amounts to no more than seven.
If buyers are interested in stumping up bloated salaries then Samba, Remy and Hoilett will have interest. The rest of ‘em…? Well they might just fancy sitting on fat salaries and doing about as much as they’ve done this season. It’s not as if the club have negotiated any reduction in wages for failure. One of the great new spin-offs from big business’s involvement with football is the assurance footballers – and their agents – have that even if they are downright fecking crap for a season their wages are protected by ludicrous contracts.
In marked contrast, a club that has a history of plunging headfirst into the transfer market in a desperate attempt to prove to its fanbase that it’s a serious player might just have turned a corner in a manner other clubs could aspire to.
Yes, whisper it quietly but Aston Villa might just stay up after all. And with a team full of children. The marquee buy Mr Bent has sat sulkily by. Mr Lambert has cut a slightly forlorn figure – at times looking less like a man with a vision and more like one of those householders whose home has just been flooded but who insists, bleakly, that he will carry on.
If you hark back to the League Cup semi-final defeat to Bradford City you could’ve been forgiven for thinking that here was a bloke waving his P-45 at the world. But the hilariously named Randy Lerner – yes he sounds like a frat kid from a Porkies movie – actually stood by his man.
Lambert has managed without Dunne. He has played three upfront, and built it all around Benteke, a man who started the season as ‘a bit of a handful’ and has ended it as a truckload of trouble.
The defence, as callow and sure-footed as a herd of stoned giraffes, had leaked like a child’s bath-toy but Lambert nobly stuck to his course like one of those pioneering sailors who insisted the world wasn’t flat. And sure enough, he hasn’t fallen over the edge. He’s only gone and come back round again.
Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not reckoning that Paul Lambert is the future of football. But it’s damn good thing that a coach who saw fit to invest in the young players at a club gets due reward for it – especially when its relegation rivals have been trawling through agents’ lists and scooping up whatever they can find.
It’s no accident that Ferguson manages to push through youth-team players into the full squad. It helps the team, if the players are good enough. Not that the Morphy Richards of Manchester is averse to spending a shedload when he needs to.
So I for one will be delighted if Villa survive (when McLeish was in charge I would have said the opposite.) Middlesbrough try their best to push thrpugh the local boys too. Whatever else it does, it doesn't half make you root even more for the team you love.

  1. Great blog this one. I thought Fabio and Townsend looked like they were trying hard but in fairness they are trying to convince bigger and better clubs that they are worthy of a place in the team next seaso.

Park has been dissappointing, Tarrabt inconsistent (or mercurial if that's what you want to call it) and Boswinga showed why it was Chelsea stopped picking him.

I kind of wanted Villa to get relegated as it's always interesting when a big club takes the tumble to see whether they can bounce back but it looks like Wigan will be falling through the trap door especially if teh game at Norwich is a draw

  4. Wigan look doomed.

Shame really,as Martinez is a good manager and the entire cost of running Wigan is less than the QPR wage bill.

Redknapp is an extremely over rated manager,so pleased they've gone down.

Villa's youth team (according to a Villa fan punter of mine) is something special and Lambert may well turn out to be a very good manager.

  8. Good stuff Robbo and a nice tip of the cap to Mr. Charles. I wanted them to beat Reading, not to prolong the agony, just to leave a glimmer of hope, anything for more football drama. I think 'arry did a fair bit better than Sparky though but cobbling together a team half way through is no way to succceed. As Noel or Tone pointed out on the last blog, seems way more than a year ago that he was top tip for the England job!

  9. QPR have surprised everyone by how bad they have been this year - both as a team and as individuals. I always liked Park (even though he often looked like a headless chicken, he used to get the job done at Utd), but he seems to have been as anonymous as others like SWP and Onuoha who gave a pretty good account of themselves at other clubs and - I thought - moved to get more playing time.

Oh well, someone has to get relegated and it leaves it a scramble for the last spot. I have a soft spot for Wigan and Robbo has pointed out Lambert sticking to the kids at Villa, so I guess we have to hope that its the bar codes with "10-year-Pardew" who go down. Don't think so mind you - the Wigan-Villa game on the last weekend will be the decider I think and I will feel sad for whichever one doesn't make it.

  11. Another linguistic masterclass. A herd of stoned giraffes... that's a back four I'd pay to see.

Will financial fair play apply to teams trying to gain promotion? If so, QPR better hope they can sell nearly everyone.

Wouldn't it be great if there were a points-per-player-cost bonus of some sort? Let the accountants work it out (salaries, bonuses, transfers?), but reward teams that spend less per point with a European place (with partially paid travel?), a greater share of the league profits (instead of by place only), or something else meaningful.

Would be nice to penalize the overspending failures, too, but that might be a bridge too far.

  12. Afternoon to you all from, this the most oranje of days in, the Lowlands. Yes the Queen has abducated and we have a new King, these events have filled me with… well…. alcohol, if I’m wearing an orange coloured garment, then there’s no way in hell I’m doing it sober. Came out of "retirement" for a few gigs last night, was fun, but getting home at 7 in themorning and having to open up at 11 is killing. #I'mgetting2old4thisshit.

Any roader, good stuff RR, couldn't agree more, QPR deservedly go down. Proof, if it was ever needed, that throwing a shedload of cash at a problem doesn't necasarily solve it, in fact quite the opposite has happened. QPR were promoted two years back with a core of semi decent players and were now relegated with a collection of so called higher class ones who'se collective value was embarrasingly lower then the sum of it's expensively gathered parts.

Venkeys have, deservedly, got a lot of stick for medling with Blackburn and I'm sure that Fernandes had the best intentions at heart, but how is this any different? I'm no fan of Colin Wanker, but he got them promoted and deserved to be allowed to have a better go at it then he was given. Sparky took over and started to splash the cash like a drunken sailor on a collection of crap. 'arry then came in, moaned about how his predecessor had wasted money on mercenaries and then just to spice things up brought in a few more on ridiculous wages, Chris Samba on a ton a weeK?? The mind boggles. Plus, he hasn't really done much better then the other two has he? His record there is pretty appauling, he may of got away with the tax fraude last year, but he's definetly going down this time.

Now all the talk is about a fire sale and moving these mercenarys on, well, as I said a few weeks ago, good luck with that. They're tainted now, parts of a relegated side that have had serious questions asked about their commitment and professionalism, who's going to want them? And more appropraite who can afford them? A bunch of relegated losers on Champions League winners salaries, yeah, I can see all the top clubs in Europe knocking down the doors of Loftus Rd to sign that lot...... Not!!!
Good luck in the Championship, they're gonna need it, that looks to me, from the admitedly limited times I get to see it, like a very hard league to get out of.

Would be interested to know if Peter Odd and Wingey is still so desperate to sign?

  13. From previous.

Bo sir, I'm afraid I'll just have to respectfullty agree to disagree reguarding Ramsey. I can't see how a player getting a red card would improve your team. Yes, he gave the ball away a few too many times for my liking too, but he literaly run himself into the ground for the cause Sunday.

Agree with the rest though, pulling Rosicky was a strange one for me too.

  14. Well, FFL wise I can be crowned Robbo H2H champion and next week's game between Stephen and me will probably decide the jacks H2H champion. Stephen Baker (hello whoever you are, do stop by and gloat) has easily taken both the regular leagues. I dont see anyone stopping him now.

  15. My team are trying desperately to tank and there's still time to drop further. But AH, our matchup is in Robbo's H2H, and you've won that already. I've got Supermarines, Robs Raiders, and Tabletop Tractors left in Jacks' H2H. Supermarines haven't made transfers in a while and seem to be on autopilot but have a very strong team. Don't think Raiders are still around but they almost outscored me last week anyway. May come down to the final week, as Tractors are still alive and kicking while none of your three opponents seem to be paying attention.

Either that, or all my meaningful analysis was backward because I got the leagues switched.

  17. QPR looked like a poorly assembled FFL team but they did not have a cash limit. I agree I would like to see Villa survive but I actually think Norwich may be at risk too as I do not see them with a "gimme" game left. Could make the last week interesting if they have not picked up a point before then.

    2. Their best hope is if West Brom have decided mentally to end the season early. Villa will beat them on this form and Man City will want to go out with a win. I just don't see 38 points being enough for them to stay up this season. Ipswich might get their derby back and that is always a passionate game.

      Delete
  18. Fair enough H2. Maybe Ramsey needs to run himself into the ground every week to make up for his lack of quality ala Robbie Savage, coincidentally another Welshman.

As you know from previous comments I have made, I am not a fan of Ramsey's, especially since he came back from his broken leg. He puts in one good game in five or six, yet is selected every week, which tells me we either have a lot of problems in midfield or my judgement of the player is way off the mark.... seeing as I am rarely wrong H2, the former must be true.

They could offer the doctor an incentive to tell all -allowing him to practice for instance - but that isn't going to happen either. 23. though I did support you on the last blog regarding Ramsey H, as in I admire his work rate recently, Bo's post has me thinking again and now im also remembering the shedload of one on ones and easy chances he has missed over the season. The guy just cannot score! which is why I'd still wanna upgrade him to some other player, but AOC is not the answer mind you, looks like it will take wenger a few years to get his touch sorted and then another few to sort out his decision making.

    1. Ramsey can't score? He's a defensive midfielder, it's not his job to score, but I'll admit he has got himself in a few positions where he realy should of done better.

How's about Jack Wilshere? How many has he got this year?

Should we get rid of him too?

      Delete
    2. What kind of logic is that?? A professional footballer playing for the 4th biggest(richest) club on the planet should be able to score when he is one on one with the keeper. And his chances were pretty easy ones, not the kinds that needed clever finishes against a charging keeper. Wilshere... he does not score many, but thats due to his style of playing and position, but he does not miss many easy chances either. and its not even about missed chances, its about the way Ramsey misses them that shows panic in his play which he might not be able to cut out. Wilshere on the other hand is always calm and that means that he is well capable of eventualy becoming a good goal scoring midfielder like fabregas, who had similar stats in his first seasons.

then again, like i said, i admire Ramseys recent work ethic, its just that i dont see the potential of him becoming anything more than a flamini, and its all well and good to have the workhorse player but a club like Arsenal can do better, and that is the gist of what me and Bo are saying.

Bee Zee, you can't ask where the logic is in saying that a Defencive midfield shouldn't be missing chances and follow it up with saying that Jack Wilshere doesn't score many because of the position he plays, he's an attacking miffielder ffs, the same position that Santi Carzola has been chipping in goals from all season.

  53. So we're going to have to put up with Steve Bruce again next season. Fucks' sake. How Paul McShane will have played in the Premier League twice, I'll never know.

My second team, Wolves, relegated to League 1 where they'll get battered by blog's Vale next season. Be a good away trip for you blogs - if you can forget that you're in Wolverhampton, then it's a great stadium to go to.

And commiserations to Trotts. What a final day in the Championship.

  54. The MLS (and MLB, NBA, NHL, NFL etc.) would be much more interesting with relegation. So it wouldn't work for any other league (except the NFL) thanks to the farm system, but it could still work with the MLS. They'd figure out something for the draft one way or another... so much more to play for.

    1. Perhaps they should try the American system in Scotland, they seem to have tried every other gimmick to make the leagues more "interesting" to the locals whilst everyone else thinks "wtf".

I must remember to keep taking my medication.

  58. Early today I was sadly thinking about how a Merseyside derby start of May, and neither of the teams had anything to play for, except not making the Europa League. Sadly, both sets of players were obviously thinking the same. Absolutely no energy or passion. Couldnt believe it was a Merseyside derby .

  59. Fergie's team selection was an insult to the rest of the teams vying for a top 4 spot. He's a hypocritical cunt (sorry Bells). Chelsea have the bit between their teeth, and a squad large enough to cope with the Europa League, so fourth is between Spurs and the Arse. Neither team playing well at the moment - Spurs to get 5th.

Fergie hoping Bale will want to leave if we don't get Champions League is my guess as to why he picked the team he did today.

  61. With that midfield, best in the league by miles, if Chelsea buy in a top striker, I can see them winning it next year.

    1. I don't mind Utd picking a weakened team, or giving squad players matches so that they qualify for a league winners medal, but it's the hypocrisy of Fergie saying he'd be fair to the other teams, and let's not forget, the comment that made Keegan go mental and scream 'I'd love it', was Fergie complaining that Newcastle would field weakened teams against Utd's league opponents.

Again, he's a cunt (again, sorry Bells).
