Pick It Up Or Kick It Out

Once again football has been dominated by one issue this last week and indeed over the weekend.

No it's not the fact that a toddler's got more chance of finishing a bowl of soup with a plastic fork than Luis Suarez has of finishing a decent chance. It's not even the question as to why the Wayne Rooney who plays for Manchester United turns out wearing normal football boots, whereas the one in the England shirt wears boots made out of a fluffy Victoria sponge. No, it's not even the fact that Harry Redknapp continues to make the rest of the pundits on Match of the Day look like chumps of the highest order.

No, it's race. And racism. And what to do about it.

Jason Roberts sounded like a lone voice in the wilderness when he said he'd not wear his 'Kick It Out' t-shirt on Saturday. Certainly Sir Alex Ferguson seemed to think so, even snidely coupling Roberts's standpoint with his role as a TV pundit. So when Rio Ferdinand avoided putting one on too, the Govan Beetroot's face grew more purply than ever.

Fortunately, the issue has been sorted at United, not least because the rest of football's top managers rather thought it was down to the individual players to decide whether they wanted to wear the t-shirt or not, what with them being grown-ups and all. (I still wonder whether the adults at Liverpool Football Club really wanted to wear those Suarez supporting t-shirts but that's for them, too, I guess).

Mark Hughes said that it's hard to eradicate racism from the game entirely but "Any campaign that looks to address an ill in our game and in society needs to be supported irrespective of the fact of whether they are doing enough or not."

Well yes and no, Sparky. I mean I'm sure Nick Griffin thinks that he is addressing a lot of ills in our society but I don't think I'm going to signing up for his solution.

It looks like Roberts, Ferdinand et al are disassociating themselves from a campaign that almost every other footballer has signed up to and undermining the consensus. So the question is 'Why?'

The amount of money the Kick It Out campaign receives would make a football agent blush. In 2010-11, it was less than half a million pounds, or 2 weeks of Carlos Tevez's wages. Or the daily rate for John Terry's lawyers. Or the amount of cash the latest posh twats on Grand Designs have found down the back of their Chesterfield sofa to spend on a new build in the shape of an oyster-shell on the harbour-front at Whitstable or some such bloody place. Yawn. It is, as the modern parlance might have it, fuck-all.

Furthermore, Kick It Out hasn't played an enormous role in the recent issues surrounding the Uruguayan tumbler and the Chelsea skipper - and yes, despite everything, Terry remains the club captain. That's just embarrassing. That might have something to do with why some black players don't think the race issue is being addressed properly.

In a statement Kick It Out states that:  Kick It Out said it "works in partnership with the game's governing bodies" and added: "We are not a decision-making organisation with power and resource as some people think, and can only work effectively in the context of these partnerships."

In other words, we're not up to much really. We can't do anything. We do go round chatting to people and reminding them not to be horrible to each other. But we don't make the decisions. And frankly if I was a black player I'd start to wonder what the point of the whole thing was.

It's much like Sepp Blatter, a man who so patently treats the game with contempt, urging football to get behind this Respect campaign. It takes a lot more than a few handshakes and some nice tee-shirts to imbue respect and anti-racism.

We might start by banning Serbia from international competition until it sorts its scumbags out. Sinisa Mihajlovic, the current national manager, is a cast-iron racist. Unsurprisingly he was much-loved at Lazio, whose fan base loves a monkey chant and yet is ironically unevolved itself. There's a decent column on Mihajlovic here: http://www.heraldscotland.com/sport/football/sinisa-mihajlovic-a-history-of-violence.18786287

He's more complicated than he seems, and Vieira, for all his high-mindedness, was just as guilty of racism during a spat with the Serb, but nevertheless there's no debating the accusation. (Yes he was very good at free kicks too but then Mussolini made the trains run on time, Enoch Powell had a way with words and Josef Goebbels simply loved his kitten.)

And it wasn't very long ago that black Britons were subject to the usual crowd hoots in Spain and that led to the sort of smack on the hand that wouldn't make a three-year-old wince. In other words there's a history of quiet toleration around such issues.

On the one hand Kick It Out and Respect parade around wearing the badges of genuine concern but when an issue has to be tackled head-on the FA or UEFA or FIFA are less Lee Cattermole and more Daniel Sturridge. At their worst, they are Lip Service in action.

Now three-quarters of the funding for Kick It Out comes from the FA, the Premier League and the Professinal Footballers' Association. It is by definition dependent. And it's hard for a dependent organisation to criticise those on which it depends. (Although my kids don't seem to have any bother having a pop at us, the ungrateful beggars). Many would like Kick It Out to be independent.

There's a way this can be done but it might mean that footballers give up a little more of their paltry weekly wages to fund it. Perhaps 1% to get it up and running.  They could certainly afford it in these austere times and it would certainly give the campaign fresh impetus and single-mindedness. Maybe clubs could offer up a proportion of their gate receipts, too, if they really want to help.

Let's be clear, racism in British football is nowhere near the issue it was when Clyde Best was enduring obscene chanting, not least from the terraces at Ayresome Park. Old 'Arry was right about that on Match of the Day. But that's still no reason not to stamp it our where you find it.

And if Kick it Out isn't helping then what is the point of it?

  1. Solid as always, Robbo. As a budding researcher, I immediately wondered if I could get funding to test the Suarez v Soup situation. Then I wondered why players wouldn't go along with your idea of 1% funding for an independent Kick It Out campaign. Then I realized that only one of those two ideas is likely to be funded (and win me an Ig Nobel, perhaps). Anyone for soup?

EPL, Serie A, La Liga, Budesliga, these competitions do not belong to those nations! The richest nations scour the globe looking for the best talent. That talent could be black, yellow, pink, purple, blue!!!! So fuck throwing bananas at quality black players who didn't ask to be there. They were purchased for their abilities. 3. Half a million is that all they get? And most of that is wasted on unworn t-shirts.

Kick it Out is like the Women's Institute and protesting about the WI not throwing themselves in front of Frankel or not burning their bras (not least becaude they're vast cast iron twin cantilever constructions like the Humber Bridge) seems a not odd to me. Put thy money where thy mouth is.

Which is not to say it should just be down to black players. How about a Racism Levy. Anyone found guilty pays half a million to a paramilitary anti-racist group, first "hit" .... John Terry.

  4. Solid blog once again RR.

Personally I think the players who refused to wear the shirts are more part of the problem then then the solution, as Blogs pointed out on the previous offering it's a bit like the dolphins protesting Greenpeace.

Maybe the campaign doesn't have the neccesary clout to punish or ban racists, but it does try to highlight the problems By boycotting it these individuals are willingly undermining the campaign and taking away the little power it does hold. Does that make you feel proud Rio, Jason and co?

    Let's look at it from a different angle, hypothetically;

What do you think would of happened if a white player, let's say for example a former England captain (as is Rio) came out and said he wasn't going to don a KIO garment?

When asked why he refused to participate, he came with the explanation that he didn't think that him wearing said t-shirt would really change anything and the organisation had no real power.

What do you all think would happen then?

The shit would hit the fan and cover the game in excrament from north to south and east to west, that's what would happen.

Yet, this is the exact same reason being peddled out by those who chose not to support the scheme this weekend. Now I'm not saying that the non t-shirt wearers are racists, but to a degree they are showing intolarance and they certainly are playing the race card, ironically against an organisation that was set up to make their workplace a more tolarable place.

The whole timing of the "protest" is pretty sad too, you'd think that after the despicable way that Danny Rose was treated and the whole hullabaloo surrounding the Serbia - England clash that players in England would want to put on a united front.

Don't get me wrong, I applaud those who stand up and fight injustice, but RF is nothing but a fucking hypocrite, making inapropriate statements about "choc ices" one week while bemoaning that the crackdown on racism is not good enough the next. You can't have it both ways son. A racist is a racist no matter what the colour of your skin.

    1. I disagree with this. Would anyone be talking about the KIO campaign if Roberts, Rio etc decided to go along with the majority and wear the t-shirt.

By not wearing it they have (perversely) increased the media coverage of the campaign at a time when racism seems to creeping in a little more.

It also highlights that FIFA, UEFA and the FA do not do enough to combat racism. Harsher punishments need to be handed out, e.g.any proven incidents of racism, by fans and/or players, then the club should be docked points on top of the "normal" punshiment. People would then take it seriously if they missed out on promotion or winning the league by a point. Or worse still if they were relegated because of it.

  26. To all the commenters above: how many of you are non-White?

How many of you have experienced genuine racism?

As a non-White person who, though assimilated and integrated into wider British society, I experienced (suffered) racism from individuals and experienced institutional racism. Being on the receiving end of vile words and openly hostile actions is about the most humiliating thing that can happen to any human being. Being me, I never played the race card but worked to prove myself better than my fellow workers -- only problem was that I had to work twice as hard as the rest of my colleagues.

My worst experiences were on social outings when most of the crew got stinking drunk and people whom i had considered as being allies would utter some really foul stuff about non-White colleagues.

I was glad for these experiences because it made me realise that no matter how hard we non-Whites work to integrate, assimilate or whatever, the majority of the wider White community will never accept us as equals.

So, to all those who think the players who didn't wear the t-shirt last weekend are just over-reacting and being cuntish, be grateful you've never been attacked verbally or physically simply because you are not White, something that no-one has control over (unless you're Michael Jackson and suffer from a rare skin disease which required skin grafts).

    1. You think that racism is only suffered by non-whites?

      Get over yourself.

Now, I'm truly sorry that you've suffered because of others ignorance/stupidity, but believe me, I know that blacks, hispanics, latinos and asians are just as racist as whites.

I'm white, born in Holloway London in the 60's a melting pot of Irish, Italian, Greeks, Asians and many of Caribean/West Indies decendents. My parents were Irish and we were spat on and called terrorists due to acts of the IRA which at the time were busy with a bombing campaign on the Capital.

I've seen white kids be bullied by the black kids, just because they were in the majority. The Tottenham and Brixton riots were just down the road and they were not pretty no matter which ethnic culture you came from.

I got sick of the fact that I was a foriegner in the country of my birth so I fucked off at an early age. Do you think I was treated any better in Spain? Fuck no, I was a dirty immigrant there too. Did I let it get me down and cry about? NO.

I know that T-shirts aren't the answer to anything, but it's a start and instead of spoilt millionaires boycotting it, then let the fucktards do something about it. They're in a privaledged position, they have the attention and the means to make a difference, but for them it's easier to bitch and that shit makes me sick to my stomach.

      Delete
    2. I can only write about my own experience -- I cannot empathise with a White man because I have never been a White man. Having said that, I am quite aware that my own community practises racism and is more class-concious than those upper class twits running this country at the moment.

Unfortunately, those in the majority will always lord it over the minority. In one of our schools, an Asian kid happens to be fair in complexion and has greyish-blue eyes. He gets called "honkie" all the time even though he is the same as 90% of the kids in that school.

By not wearing the t-shirt the "spoilt millionaire fucktards" are trying to get a message across -- that those in power are doing little to tackle the problem and the so-called educators are funded by the powers-that-be so are not going to bite the hand that feeds them. Just watched SAF's interview about Ferdinand and to me it sounded like Ferdy 1, Fergie 0.

      Delete
    3. Have you ever walked through parts of South London in the 1980s? I did and I can guarantee you that black and asian people can be equally as racist as white people when they want to be. Getting called chalky or vanilla in the middle of the street is as unpleasant as reverse terms.

There is no monopoly on prejudice.

A black footballers association would just be divisive and for once I find myself agreeing with Joey Barton about something.

Ferdinand and Roberts are looking for a media audience as their careers are winding down and they want a prominent role in the game when they retire but an organisation based on being black is not the way forward and is as racist as havin a white footballers association.

By boycotting the Kick It Out campaign what are they saying Keep It In but from the reverse perspective? They should have backed the campaign and used it to get Keep It Out better funding which could start from their own pockets.

  27. You're right of course Profile.Racism is a scourge and no laughing matter if you're excluded or abused because if it. People still die because of it in the UK and its got to be stamped ,out. Only shitheads would disagree.

I'm not sure what you're implying though. Only black people can comment? I'm sure you don't mean to imply that racism is the only form of discrimination, gay players who darent say a word, jobless working class lads, young women might disagree Etc etc...and I'm not sure what you mean by "wider white community". That just doesn't exist any more than a notional "black community" . The worst racism I've personally witnessed had been Asian/black.

The question is ...has the reaction in football been ineffectual? Well I'm sorry to disagree but no i don't think it has. Massive strides have been made in the UK. It's not tolerated in English football. You get the occasional apologist for JT even on here. The consensus us clear though and so is the change. England isn't Serbia.

Most of our best players are black. I personally have never witnessed any racism at a football match in fact quite the reverse. Mark chamberlain was a god at port vale 20 years ago.

That's not to say it isn't still a massive problem but I think SAF is right seeing highly privileged millionaire young black players (discriminated against? fuck off) protesting against a small organisation, which doesn't enforce the rules, doing its best to kick out racism DOES send out the wrong message, they run the risk of appearing spoilt, our of touch and self pitying. And I absolutely reserve the right to take the piss.

  28. Wow... never thought my required doctoral courses in the Social and Historical Foundations of (US) Education (featuring plenty of perspectives from Marxist Feminism to critical race theory) and Qualitative Methods (complete with theoretical frameworks to support said theories mentioned in the other class) would be so timely as to allow me to comment intelligently on this board and bring the light of reason to all who read it.

Or perhaps it is my white male, albeit non-Christian (but Jewish, so perhaps even more privileged?) privilege that allows me to step back, smile, and pretend none of this exists while implicitly (or explicitly) lording my comfortable life over all others as a shining example of what you should all strive to become.

No, I'm not arrogant enough to do the first or ignorant enough to do the second. I'll just share my opinion without hitting the books. Racism is a problem that comes from many sources, but classism, genderism, and other such preferential isms are discouraging, too. (Female refs, anyone?) We can't be colorblind (genderblind? etcblind?) because we have to acknowledge that our differences make us who we are and can enrich our world on a personal and cultural level. But we shouldn't overplay them, either.

I still find it disappointing that the argument many have made in the JT case implies that it is okay to call someone a fucking cunt but not a fucking black cunt.

  32. Ah Bloggidy, always a joy. I don't think these black players are being as prissy as is being made out. Cyrille Regis said yesterday that it's a response to the leniency of the Terry ban. I'm not saying it's the right response. Kick It Out didn't decide on Terry's crime being somehow less awful because it was uttered once, rather than throughout a game. Zero Tolerance my backside. So to be seen to be having a pop at KIO seems a little like being attacked by a cat and kicking its kitten. Still Rio is said to be trying to put together something with more independence from the FA and maybe that's the way forward. We'll see.
As for the wider point, well I take your point, H. The signs in B&B's in the 50s and 60s said 'No Blacks No Irish.' The disrimination was not particularly discriminate. The difference is that an Irishman might have been able to affect an accent. A black man couldn't affect a different skin colour. Not that either should need to be attempted. I'm all for non-white representation, especially on this little corner of the web, Profile, but yours is not the only form of discrimination. On a serious note though, I am beginning to believe that humans need to discriminate against each other. Its human nature. I travel to India often enough (say, what happened to our resident India rep, Mr SS?) and you would expect that with the caste system they used to have (and still do to some extent), some extent of casteism as they call it would still exist. But truth is even within the same caste, a Brahmin from South India faces taunts/racist jibes from Brahmins in North India. Human nature, we just need someone a little different to pick on. If everyone looked and spoke exactly the same, the guys who woke up early would probably discriminate against the late risers. Its only the fear of the law that can put paid to these baser instincts.

  40. Much as i hate to disagree with the majority opinion on this blog (haha, who am I kidding..), riddle me this ya'all:
Would we still be talking about KIO had everyone wore them garbs?
The answer me friends is a big fat NO.
For once I think the knuckleheads got it right (not sure if they meant it this way or were just being self-obsessed cunts). If they all had worn the KIO shirts, we'd have applauded and moved on within hours (difficult to admit but true), but now everyone's talking/gossipping/going all purple about it, which for me constitutes end-jusifying-means.
So don't go telling me (or yourselves) that it was a bad thing that them all made a fuss over the weekend, it was the best thing that a bunch of shirts could have achieved. Cheers.

More like you're dropped, fined and do it again and your getting slapped. If we had more fit defenders Fergie's public stance would have been far more scathing. Ferdinand has come across as a hypocrite considering his recent fine for a racist comment directed at Ashley Cole

  58. Yeah, what Fergie meant to say was that it was a miscommunication based on our shortage of defenders and if I'd really not had a shortage of defenders I would have suspended him but don't tell me you would have respected me more if I had because that shouldn't enter into it because we just had a miscommunication.

If Clattenburg did make the comment(s) then he should be punished/disqualified, but if he did not, and this complaint is totally without foundation, then Chelsea must face some very serious charges.

  97. Loving all the hatred for United.

First sending off was 100% correct and contrary to what a lot of people in football are saying it can still be considered as diving even if you have contact. Personally i thought the second red was a little harsh but I think Hanson got it spot on last night saying Clattenburg didn't realise in time that he had already booked him. But Torres could have been sent off for his earlier De Jong impression so I don't think its all that controversial. Now obviously the goal was offside but its absolute bollocks to suggest the referee or linesmen were not good enough because of it or were in United's pocket.

All yesterday proved is that United are hated as much as always. If everything had happened the other way round there wouldn't be anywhere near as much hysteria. In fact come to think of it, nearly every year at Stamford Bridge United would get dodgy ref decisions but surprise surprise there was no nationwide vitriol.

A couple of issues seem to have been lost in the rush to abuse Clattenburg (who got a fair number of calls wrong on Sunday).

      1. Coins were thrown at Hernandez when he was celebrating the winning goal. A steward was taken to hospital. Ignoring the fact that the Chelski fans are about as accurate as Fernando, that should result in 3 games behind closed doors.
      2. One of the Redtops is reporting that a Chelski player threatened to break Clattenburg's leg. That's a disrepute charge if true. Chelski and their fans have form here (see the retirement of Anders Frisk).

  111. And another bloody thing that annoys me is the Association of Black Lawyers or the National Black Police Association. Why have we got a separate organisation based on the colour of someones skin? Would I be allowed to start an "Association of White Lawyers"?
There's a pub near me that has a sign outside which says "Polish only". I can guarantee that if I opened a pub a put a sign outside saying "No Foreigners" I'd get taken to court pretty damn quickly.
It seems that the only people it's ok to discriminate against now is white middle class British people.

      Wonderful! When do I start?

While I do understand your general sentiments, I also know that as a white (male) person I have so many privileges I really shouldn't complain about things like that. Maybe Britain is different.

  112. The Association of BLack Lawyres chairman has made a complaint about Clattenburg to the police.

Apparently he didn't hear or see anything but "information has reached him about an incident" which is lawyer speak for I was reading Steven Howards ABU column in the Sun newspaper and thought I'd jump on the bandwagon and get myself on the news like that chippy Diane Abbott who was on Sky last night talking about it even though she knows nothing about football at all

    1. It's all stupid, everyone jumps on the bandwagon. Diane Abbott is a racist anyhoo, if she was white and said the things she did about british people she wouldn't be an MP.

    2. Racism in football is such a sensitive matter now it is impossible to have a decent debate about it. Apparently calling someone a black bastard is a racist comment and can result in a criminal record whereas if you call someone a Paddy cunt or English twat is at worst just offensive and not very caring of peoples feelings. People don't understand what racism is anymore. Next they'll changing the names of towns or cities with black in them and appointing Paul Ince as England manager.

  113. Stevie G - Everton are like Stoke (a long ball team)

Yeh, that's why they spent £35m on Andy Carroll...

    1. On the BBC site someone put "And Liverpool play like Port Vale"

Bit harsh on the Vale I thought.

    2. Are you 'jbvalefan'? Least someone is sticking up for the Vale.

'3rd best goal difference in the country? 2 pacey goal scoring wingers? We would give Liverpool a game.'
