In Praise of Fergie

Here's an ugly truth for you. Alex Ferguson, Sir, is the finest football manager the English game has ever seen. I mean that's uglier than a close-up of Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's face mid-shit.

'How come I cannae see any decent opposition through this specs?'

I can hear the protests from the Scouse brigade but the Liverpool dynasty wasn't just one bloke was it? There'll be some advocates for Cloughie and maybe he did more turd-polishing with the players at his disposal but...

And there'll be some that argue that he can't be the best manager ever cos he's bleeding 'orrible. That opinion's got about as much influence as a Liberal in a cabinet meeting.

This latest outfit at Old Trafford are proof positive of Fergie's greatness. It's not a great team. The midfield's had a creativity bypass unless old man Giggs is Pilated in. The bench is pretty threadbare if you ask me. And if Vidic or Rio is out the back four's distinctly creaky.

Hellfire the Croxteth Bruiser was set to leave cos he recognised the shortcomings. Now Rooney's buzzing again and looking like the bastard son of Susan Boyle and Roy of the Rovers.

(Incidentally, Graeme Souness - emphatically not the best manager the English game's ever seen - insists that Rooney needs to be angry to play well. That is of course self-serving bollocks. Souness was always angry and it suits him to suggest other people need to be similarly furious.)

So how come United are still on for the treble? Well mainly cos Fergie's got them playing in a way that suits them. His reincarnations of United over the years have been little short of amazing.

First of all there was the Party Central brigade of Robson (get well soon), Brucey and co who he managed to dry out enough to keep going for a whole season. Then there was Hansen's 'kids' - a bunch of squeaky-voiced schoolboys who matured into top-class footballers once Robbie Savage had left. Not long ago he had Ronaldo, Tevez and Rooney criss-crossing across the opposition back-line like the Red Arrows in human form.

This season he's got a ploddy steady grind-it-out bunch of triers. Plus the best goalscorer in the division who cost him 6 million (I mean Chiquitita or whatever he's called - a snip).

He's not stuck to the same formations or looked for the same types. Not for him the tippy-tappy automatons of Arsenal. Or the steely-eyed mercenaries heeding the whiff of Roman's wallet.

He's made the best of what he's got or paid shed-bloody-loads when he's had to.

Yes he's bought a lot of duffers along the way: Djemba-Djemba (so shite they named him twice); Poborsky (he should've torn up that Czech a lot sooner); and Kleberson? Well not clever, son...

'What?... No boss I never ordered no taxi!

But he's made legends of looneys like Cantona, he's been patient with gelled show-ponies like Ronaldo and Nani, and his 1999 front pair were Cole and Yorke - I mean you'd have to be a genius to think that that was going to work.

It's an astounding record. There are things we can do without when it comes to Fergie. The gratuitous ref-bashing. The absurd mentality that makes him think United are being victimised just cos Rooney's gets banned for being a plank and he gets put it in the stands for saying the ref was biased.

He could also talk to the Beeb and stop sending Stonewall Phelan in to bat for him. It's petty and tedious. Then again the good managers seem to be able to harness their neurosis for the good of the team.

And there's the mysterious way he seems to manipulate time to encompass his team's victories.

(Maybe Rory McIlroy could do with his bunker mentality. Poor lamb. For three days he trotted around that course like a finely-tuned Goofy - and for the last round he was little short of a grief-stricken Donald Duck.)

It's clear Ferguson inspires loyalty, that's for sure. Some of the steady Eddies that have stuck there cos he's stuck with them: Brown, O'Shea, Fletcher... you've never heard them bleating about lack of first-team opportunities like the vast cellar of whines across the city at Eastlands.

Now I realise this blog will be coming as a great surprise to a lot of you. But the thing is I've been waiting for the demise/retirement of the Govan Beetroot for about fifteen years now.

I've been watching his touchline-jig getting more and more like your pissed Uncle attempting a hokey-kokey at your cousin's wedding. I've been waiting with baited breath as the noisy neighbours pelt him with wads of Abu-Dhabian wonga. I've watching the face redden as the old boy seems ready to reach for the blanket and the thermos.

(And while he does like his red wine, I reckon the boozy complexion must be down to the same condition as I've got - rosacea, it's called. You can alleviate the symptoms by cutting down on alcohol and spicy food so it looks like I'm stuck with it.)

Skin complaints? Bring 'em on.

Only Mourinho has kept Fergie under during all that time. And Wenger's Untouchables for one glorious strong-tackling season. Be great if real And United could fight it out at Wembley in the Champs League Final. The footy wouldn't be great but you could just watch the dug-outs for 90 minutes.

So do I like Ferguson? Nah. Not much. Am I saying he could've done all this without United's cash? Nah. And while there's still some debt for the Glazers to offload there'll still be money in Fergie's kitty.

But he's bloody good at his job. I mean I don't like our postie much either - he's always trying to charm the missus and he can't whistle in tune (I'm thinking of getting a dog) - but so long as he gets my letters to me I don't much care.

So fair play to him. I reckon a double at least this season. Barca'll probably stop him in Europe. But for him, at his age, with his track record, to be able to get that pretty ordinary side to two semis and a pretty certain Premier League.

The best ever? Fact. Rafa.

Now piss off and leave the rest of us in peace you gruff n greedy Glaswegian codger.

  6. I have to agree with you Robbo as bad as it tastes to say it... ol' rednose is the best manager in England without question. Anyone that can take this Un**ed team to two semi's and the PL has to have a lot going for him.

  7. Hey Scholesy, long time no see mate.

  8. SD, yeah summat like that mate. It hurts my brain to try and figure it out. Need a computer or summat.

Hello Bo, how you doing? I dont think the title race is over mate. Too many big games to go.

  9. I don't see who can catch them mate, Arsenal wont, they bottle it whenever they have the opportunity, Chelsea (who I think are the best team in the comp) are too far away from you guys as are the rest.

  10. This week could see Arsenal hand the PL to you guys... we play Liverpool at home on Sunday then next Wednesday we're away to Spurs... no guarantee of points at either game.

  12. Great blog Robbo as always. Classic combo of penetrating analysis and rampant iconoclasm - love it. Any chance you could crank 'em out a bit more often than once every 10 days matey? It's hard having to wait so long.

  13. I think we are all flawed Bo, not a great team in the league.

I know what you mean about the Liverpool and Spurs games, but not sure if liverpool will be that much of a threat. They seem a bit dodgy away from home. I fancy you for a draw against spurs.

I think we need to get something from our game and a point against chelsea to do it. We have Everton, who normally give us a battle, the geordies away, who will be up for it as well.

Saying that, we are at least playing quite well at the moment and the players are back. Most of the season has been about hanging in there. How we didnt lose for so long i dont know.

  14. You have the master of the headgame at the helm Scholesy... nothing he says he says without thinking of of how it affects his team and the opposition (and the referees)... his rants about the refs have purpose (the touchline bans are a joke so that doesn't bother him at all.)

    ReplyDelete
  15. Agreed mate, dalglish was very good at it in the late 80's and used to get at fergie, but i think he learnt from it and took it on a level. I have to say the touchline ban is a joke. The manager shouldnt be able to go in to the bloody dressing room.

Right ive got to get some sleep mate. Up at 5.

    type soon, take care mate

  16. agreed, a twat and a genius. but does he HAVE to be a twat to achieve those results? probably. In that case do the ends justify the means? oh yes. why can't other managers therefore adopt his twatish methodology to achieve similar results?

    they just can't, he's a genius

  18. mornin' all, good stuff Robbo, provocative too, not as much as Miss Millwall's tits from last summer but provocative nontheless!

of course he's the most successful of this era but Bill Nicholson, Matt Busby and Bobby Robson must be in the debate, at least the debate in my head which asks the question; which manager of all time would I want managing my team? Fergie wouldn't make the top ten.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Bobby Robson would be my number one Trott by some margin... a great manager and a nice bloke; a rare combination. My number two would be Brian Clough, great manager but a bit of a twat (not in fergies class of twatiness though.)... take your pick after that.

  20. I think Roy Keane is being unfairly overlooked in the 'Greatest Ever British Managers' debate.

Great blog Robster. I hate United, don't get me wrong, but these last few seasons have stirred up very unfamiliar feelings towards old twatface Fergie. He has to be respected for getting a pile of steaming dog shite, albeit with a few gems in it, up and smelling of roses. Am I mixing my analogies too much? However, his record in the transfer market is shocking, so he can't be viewed as a great manager in that regard. And Cantona was already a great player at Leeds, and Sheffield Wednesday before that - Utd just bought a great player - it had nothing to do with Fergie turning him into a star.

  26. Hey Robbo,
The difference between Fergie and Wenger is...

Fergie does it. Wenger just talks yak yak yak....

When Un**ed lose, Fergie sits back and takes into consideration the situation and fires the team and players installs a kind of fear and hence players come out and perform.

Wenger on other hand adopts a more softer approach, he again blows the balloon of hope by telling not so good players that they are young and one fine day will be one of the best in the league.

If SAF wins the 19th title this season, it would be really a remarkable achievemnt for his team.

  28. Sporting/Professional greatness seldom go hand in hand with chivalry.

Examples: Woods, Federer, Ponting, Maradona, Schumacher (the successful one), ...

However, there are many who do seem to take an account of themselves and consider others humans too

you got your Tendulkar, Cruyff, Haile Gebrselassie, Robson, ...

So Fergie, yes, to say he's the greatest ever football manager in england is true. To say he's a twat is an understatement.

But I guess, his sort sleep well knowing they won and dont give a toff about what others think of them.

    -----------------------------------------------

Fergie focused him and ultimately brought out the best in Cantona (especially the 95/96 season)whereas other managers were unable or unwilling to manage him well.

His record in the transfer market is excellent. Yes there have 5 or 6 shockers but the vast majority of signings have been brilliant.

Looking better for the red side of Manchester after Arsenal couldn't find the goal again. Fergie will be feeling extra smug now, the git. Rio not too happy with Balotelli winding up the Utd fans at Wembley? He seemed to be ok with GNev doing it to the City fans.

As for Bale getting the PFA Player of the Year award - not sure about that. Certainly in the first half of the season he and Nasri were the stand out performers, but he's been injured or out of form since January really. Not too much competition though I suppose - maybe Vidic has been more consistent over the season. Happy for Gareth though. Also glad he's under a long term contract!

We conceded the penalty after 11 minutes [of stoppage time] and the injury time was [supposed to be] eight minutes. It was no penalty and I don’t see where the three minutes came from."
    -------------------------------------
Shut the fuck up Arsene! We did not score for 90 minutes and the game seemed to be a goalless draw which is simply not acceptable when we play at Emirates. Just because we first got a late penalty and went 1-0 up doesnt mean we dropped 2 points. We were anyways going to drop those points irrespective of penalty decisions.. rather than lamenting ref I think Arsene should be scolding his defenders Clichy and Song who failed to clear the ball.

    ReplyDelete
  97. I agree with that SS, that world-and-all-its-refs-are-against-us thing isn't working for your team, Arsene, maybe you're just not as good at it as SAF.

he [Fergie] gets put it in the stands for saying the ref was biased.

    ----------------------------------------------------

He didn't say the ref was biased he said the tie needed a "fair, or strong referee anyway". Some may think I'm nit picking but its a great example how Fergie says one thing and everyone in the media turns it into something else, resulting in a ban and a fine. Wenger got nothing for saying the referee's decisions were disgusting which although funnier than Fergie's comment, is surely worse than saying he wanted a strong referee.

Anyway, fair play to Citeh, they played very well and actually looked a half decent side. I'm glad Stoke are through because I think they'll give them a good game in the final.

Anyone watch the boxing on Saturday night? It was possibly the most disgraceful end to boxing match ever. Theres something funny going on here. Kahn was knackered and I'm pretty sure McCloskey could have won. McCloskey's game plan is always to soak up pressure for 6 rounds then attack. Then all of a sudden Kahn head butts him in the 6th round and the fights over. BBC five live were reporting it saying the fight ended because McCloskey was too badly beaten up. There wasn't a mark on him apart from the small cut from Kahn head butting him. I only hope McCloskey keeps going to set up a rematch maybe 3 or 4 years down the line because he had Kahn seriously worried.

  105. Rod,
It's all in the semantics of what Fergie said. He implied that the ref was either corrupt or incompetent. Wenger criticised the decisions and not the man.

Boxing is like horse racing, it's riddled with corruption, it's too easy to fix. You only need to corrupt one man as opposed to a team. I'm not saying it doesn't happen but it's more spot betting than throwing a game though.

    ReplyDelete
  106. But Rod Wenger wasn't saying the ref was disgusting he said the decision was disgusting. You might not like it but this is the legal distinction, ie between saying a decision is disgusting and saying the person who made the decision is unfair (which means the same as biased.by the way) and weak. That's slander, a personal attack, abuse. Not that I care I think they're both cunts. Allegedly.

    --------------------------------------------------

Geh? No it doesn't. What he meant was a game of that size, magnitude and importance needed a referee who was strong enough to upset the home fans if one of their players needed sending off. Which in turn makes the referee a fair referee for both sides.

    ReplyDelete
  110. thats not what he meant rod and you know it. he meant unfairness as in lack of impartiality, due to outside pressure ie bias. But theres his genius he persuades his supporters that his paranoia is truth. Wenger fails in this even with gooners, as I said because wengers not as good st the paranoia team building technique . I suppose the other possible explanation for this is that man u fans and players are fucking thick.

    --------------------------------------------------

Absolutely agree with the point that refs are human and will make mistakes which adds to the drama of a game. However Fergie was upset because the same ref has had the game at Stamford Bridge for a few years and in his opinion he isn't strong enough. I'm not disputing Fergie questioning the ability of the referee rather the fact that everyone is saying Fergie questioned the referee's bias which he didn't.

Yeah hes from Dungiven, about 30 mins down the road from Derry. You wouldn't be able to understand the man cuz hes pure culchie. I think because Kahn won comprehensively on points he doesn't have to do a rematch. But as I said it was always McCloskey's game to tire him out by dodging his punches for 6 rounds then attack so hes been really unlucky. So, where does he say the decision was disgusting? He said he was disgusted by it, not that the decision itself was disgusting. Plus he's foreign so maybe has an excuse for not picking exactly the right word. (You'll notice he often say contre attack, for example). The French word dégoûté, from which the english disgusted is derived, can also translate as outraged, made to feel sick by something, etc. So he was describing his personal feeling about something, not commenting on the decision nor the decision maker's ability or impartialty.

  163. they're right though, aren't they spit, he WOULD have been sacked.

barcas success is via a deeper kind of cultural continuity which doesn't rely on the personality of the individual manager

at port vale, they brought in an arrogant fool in gannon who fell out with everyone, whose tactics and team selection were questionable at best, and its probably cost us a shot at promotion. what other kind of business would zig zag according to personnel like this? these people behave like medieval lords of the manor with a droit de seigneur to fuck anyone they want

  165. Blog,

    I agree.
Thing is, there is a section of fabregas's interview where he mentions how Puyol hadnt won owt before he was 26. For someone at Barca of all clubs, to not have won anything for 8 years of his pro career must have been a big deal but not quite unthinkable. They have won all that is there to win since overcoming their transitional period.

    Same must happen at Arsenal.

It may well happen that Wenger buys in a top keeper, a strong defen-mid and a top striker and as a result they win the lot in the next season but answer me this,

will the victory be accrideted to the new signing or more to Nasri, fabregas, Clichy, Song, Wilshire, Djourou, RvP etc, essentially the bunch that toiled (in however fruitful manner it may be) for the club during the last 5 years?

What if they replace wenger with some one who signs 3 players in a squad of 30 odd and then takes all the credit?

Wenger and the board set out to do a job of rebuilding the stadium, the team, the lot and asked the fans for patience.

its a bit rich to now ditch one of the parties to that contract.

I reckon, we should keep faith with Wenger for one more season when its true that he has money available. In the past, he has made such acknowledgements but anyone who had some degree of familiarity wiht the club books would testify that such claims were more to pacify the supporters than based on some hard bucks in the account.

Sure the club MUST undertake all within their means to win, but they must not do anything beyond.
