Can Chelsea Right The Cech?

Some people think your Teessider is a gruff mean-spirited bastard who dodges his rounds and breathes through a ventilator. Unfair, I reckon. Most of us get by with an inhaler. Plus, we have a footy team that never stops giving. Ask your average Palace fan.

Again, I had to rely on the Premier League to soften the blow.

The goal glut helped. 41 reminders on Saturday of what one of them elusive things looks like. And certainly the Chelsea-Liverpool game was a vintage bit of schadenfraude.

(I know! Get me! Tony Thompson introduced us to this word on Sunday - I thought it was that Austrian psychiatrist who thought that every time you dreamt it had summat to do with shagging your mother).

"No, Robbo, I am Sigmund, you must mean my brother Schaden."

Anyway, first off, didn't Torres look really weird in blue? The wife, a Nando groupie in waiting, reckoned it wasn't his colour. Ta, love. There are times when Andy Gray and Richard Keys make sense.

Secondly, on MOTD2 I heard Shearer (and by the way, Al, cuffs are for wiping your nose, son - they can't possibly be white) feeling a bit sorry for Torres. Yeah, me too. £170 grand a week, swanky pad in Chelsea if you want it, Drogba to play off... a right sodding burden, poor lamb.

Apparently it's hard being up against your old pals. Especially that Carragher, who was back to his best. You get the impression Jamie couldn't wait to get out there on the pitch and feel a number nine shirt in his clenched fist again. But Torres wasn't prepared to stick with them blokes cos he wanted to win trophies. After Sunday it just looks like Torres has chosen a different wind to piss into.

Ancelottery reckons it'll take the Spaniard a while to settle in. True enough. In which case, leave him on the bench for a bit. Lord knows it's taken the Queens of Strop Anelka and Drogba long enough to find some common ground. You don't need three mopers up there jostling with one another like three teenage lasses after the same fella.

King Kenny meanwhile goes from strength to strength. Of course the irony is that Dalglish's reds went into that game with a mindset that would've sat well happily with Roy Hodgson.

Little Clockwork Kuyt gives you a bit more energy than a narked Nando as the front man, and Meireles did well to support but essentially it was one of them team selections that began with the mantra 'It's 0-0. Let's hold what we've got.'

Having said that, Liverpool had the best chances.

Which begs questions about Chelsea's deficiencies. For a while now, their failings have started from the Number 1. Cech, headguard, notwithstanding, still plays like he's got a Stephen Hunt kneebone heading for his bonce.

When he turns out the light at night, this is what the big Czech sees.

It's understandable. I'm sure we've all had nightmares about Stephen Hunt (and there is summat instinctively really bloody annoying about the hairy little tick - he looks for all the world like some manic gnome who gets two hours off the toadstool a week and intends to make the most of it) but you can't have a keeper who's afraid to get hurt.

A good keeper is, by definition, fearless. In a successful club, it's the goalie who takes on the extra chillies at the Tex Mex; it's the goalie who helps you get back into your house at two in the morning by climbing in through the skylight - without the aid of a ladder; it's the goalie who puts it all on 17 black when everyone else is ready to go home.

Cech (has he put on weight or does he just look like a Heavy Petter?) has lost that recklessness. He keeps making that cardinal sin of keepers and engaging his brain - and Chelsea look flakier than the shoulders of a Geography teacher because of it.

By eck thouh it was a brilliant goalfest was Saturday. Not least the peanlty count - all of which barring a supposed push by Rosicky on Williamson, seemed pretty justified. (Honestly Rosicky couldn't push open a serving hatch in a doll's house).

The Geordies epic comeback was utterly marvellous, mind. The only downside was Wenger's uncharacteristically meek post-match interview. Of course it included the usual dose of myopia (Specsavers must have an option on him as their poster boy when he retires) he was relatively sanguine about the disastrous draw).

If he could avoid saying things like 'Don't listen to that Moyes boy - ooooh, he's a little liar he is!' then we might even be looking at a new Arsene.

Add to that the tardy end to Man U's inexplicable unbeaten run at the top division's David to the Goliaths, then it was a grand weekend all round. Incidentally has anyone else noticed that when United score Fergie stands up and applauds in a way that's reminiscent of either (a) a surprisingly camp Taggart or (b) Leonid Brehnev at a Mayday Parade.

"I want you to kill the soldier who yelled 'Look at the tits on that!' immediately!"

Wolves fans may be smiling ruefully at their boys inability to beat the teams around them but I've one word of warning for 'em: Middlesbrough.

Aye we were pretty topnotch when the moneybags rolled in through the smog but we bollocksed it up against everyone else and still went down. At least you know that Big Bluff Mick McCarthy will still be there by the end of the season.

Unlike Roberto di Matteo, who made the mistake of getting his team off to a good start. Faced with a poor string of results the Baggies Board have thumbed through the Official Guide to Running A Football Club and acted on the one solitary sentence in the manual that states: 'If in doubt, sack the manager.'

If I was the chairman I'd be telling the club shop to buy a job-lot of WBA yo-yos for next year. Before Di Matteo went I still had the Baggies as the best of the woeful W's that prop up the tight bottom.

If you had to pick one to avoid the drop now it'd be Wigan. However given that Tangerines haven't fallen so rapidly since the last Spanish harvest, and Blackpool are looking the likeliest candidates for the drop.

In a perfect world, you'd lose the grinders - your Brums and Blackburns - and keep your grass-is-for-passing outfits like West Brom and Blackpool.

But reality states that them that can Stoke it up will climb clear. So for me it'll be Blackpool, Wests Brom and Ham. And you'll all be welcome at the Riverside. (I hope! But God it's hard trying to write a blog with your crossed fingers grasping on to horseshoes, rabbit's feet and lucky heather while simultaneously clutching at straws!)

  1. I loved Torres "real" reasons for leaving Liverpool
    1) Liverpool are a team in transition (Yeah whats happening with Chelsea at the mo???)
    2) I want to win trophies (Man City who haven't a trophy in 30 years are above this team in the league)
    3) The Chelsea fans have always been good to me (yeah right, ofcourse they have)

......Its nothing to do with money

  2. And yeah he looks seriously weird in a Chelsea shirt.....almost reminiscent of a certain Mr A Shevchenko.....

  3. no one in their right mind thinks liverpool are likely to finish above chelsea, rod. that doesnt mean they wont of course, but on balance of probabilities anyone except a liverpool fan would agree with his (business) logic.

anyway i think you got a good deal suarez/carroll for a mis-firing torres

  5. Yeah, being a United fan still expecting Rooney to leave this summer I do feel a little empathy towards Liverpool. Just a little though.

I think Anceloti's decision to play Torres from the start was a really weird decision. Any decent top manager would've realised his team was playing well without him so why change things in a big game against their bogey team. I think the pennys just dropped (or is it his eyebrow) about how good Anceloti really is.

    ReplyDelete
  6. Agreed, Rod. Should def have had Torres on the bench at the start. What's the hurry when Chelski were looking a bit more like their old selves for a few games?

  7. What? Someone agrees with me? I'm not sure how to act now. I feel all weird, light-headed even. I'm gonna have to lie down for a bit...

  8. true enough Robbo Petr shop boy plays like he's got a gerbil up his rectum

    ReplyDelete
  9. He was a bit dodgy yesterday but no keeper is infallible these days. Even the top, top keepers have bad days. And to be fair to him he thought Kuyt was gonna connect with cross so he stood his ground anticipating the shot. If he went for the ball and Kuyt connected with the cross people would be saying he should've anticipated Kuyt connecting so I wouldn't be to harsh on him. I think Cole was pretty poor yesterday and should take more of the blame.

To be fair also Mereleis finished it really really well for being off balance.

  10. Fearless keepers have a knack of leaving you in the shit once in a while though when they push their luck too far that once too often and it all goes horribly wrong.

One look at our 2 keepers (Gomes' rush of blood to the head in Milan) and Cudicini (bugger the club rules I'll go biking anyway) Proves this.

Agreed, dumb move to play Torres from the start and even dumber to take him off when he was on, just tells the lad they wasted 50 million (cough cough). So, by the end of that match of the 108 million in new striker talent, none of it was on the pitch!

    McLaren for West Brom then!

  32. In the first half Cech had a prob with Ivanovic when a similar cross from right saw the defender and keeper panic. Eventually Cech had collected the ball then...

In 2nd half, the goal incident, it was a similar cross from Gerrard from right - this time too Cech went for it initially but the stopped in tracks seeing Ivanovic coming to cover it. But no one did their part really and they were thinking about first half incident and thats when Meireles took the chance and scored the goal.

  40. Reina signing for United would be amazing. Hes the best keeper in the EPL by a mile. An if Casillas and Valdes weren't so overrated he'd be the Spanish Number 1.

Apparently United are after the Celtic left back who according to my dad is the real deal.

Hopefully we can get rid of Evra for a decent amount of money. I'm fed up hearing the shite he spouts to French newspapers every month. I blame him for losing to Barca a couple of years back because before the game he was talking about how United were gonna steam-roll them which as we know know didn't quite happen.

I mean even Gary Neville didn't put his foot in his mouth as much as Evra. The guys obviously delusional, he thought after the France Ireland game everything would be forgotten and forgiven *shaking fist at monitor* Not on your life Frenchy!!

Anyone wondering how good meireles goal was, should take a look at maxi's miss for half a yard. makes meireles' goal look like the roberto carlos free kick.

I think about 2-3 months ago, all scousers understood that stevie, nando and pepe would leave in the summer. the way it has turned out, nando left earlier, stevie might stay and pepe will leave in the summer, so no surprises. would be a pain to see him go to IOU though if he does, but its a long way away, and by no means a done deal. I'd rather give him away to the gunners for free.

I also hope Roman buys bendtner for 50 mil to give torres company.

I have a bit of respect for Ronaldo and his dedication to the sport, not a huge amount but I think theres much worse offenders playing in England now that get off way too lightly.

Tevez for one gets a huge amount of respect and praise yet he can't speak English (hes been here 4/5 years is it), says he wants to leave his club (through his translator) and somehow remains captain. Good to see Lampard being handed the captaincy, even if it is only by default... he is the only England player (new guys aside, they haven't had time to make arseholes of themselves yet) that deserves the honour.

Was good to see Jack here even if only to pass on RBA's message.

I think it'll be Wolves, and the two West's. I reckon Holloway will squeeze enough points out of his Tangerines.

I was celebrating my shrewd management in the FFL this weekend, pleased that I'd made the choice of Tevez for captain. Then I checked to see how many points I'd got and realised that I still had Berba as my captain. Arse. Mid table obscurity beckons.

I think unemployment will start to reduce as more jobs become available and there are more positions available.

The main problem I see is graduate and youth unemployment. The latter will be solved easily due to Labour's legislation forcing everyone to stay and school or college until 18 unless they have a job or training. The former will improve when people stiop taking soft degrees and then expect a £30K job at the end of it and are realistic about what jobs they are likely to be good at.

As for Barca a few Fabregas shirts being sold in August should sort them

  138. This time last year Capello was a genius apparently. Dunno really why everyone now thinks he has no clue what hes doing. I prefer Trap to be honest but Capello is still a great manager.

    ReplyDelete
  139. An interesting fakht about "Barndoor" Bendtner, I'm sure you didn't really want to know is that he's scored the same amount of goals as the likes of Kuyt and the mighty Rooney, not bad for a third choice striker who usually starts from the bench.

He got 12 last season and 15 the season before that, mainly comming off the bench (capt Kirk wonderchair) I know he's not everybodys cup o char, even among gooners, but I like the guy and I still think he'll come good. If he could get his performance levels to match his level of confidence, he'd be unstoppable.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I dont know that I would be proud of a striker who had the same number of goals as Kuyt really :)..its not saying much.

    ReplyDelete
  141. He (Cap) has a great track record Rod, but for some reason has fell into the rut and made the same mistakes that all England managers make;
    The Gerrard/Lampard conundrum.
    Rooney out of position.
    Overrealance on certain players.
Picking goalkeepers from relegation candidate teams.

The year before he joined you he was the top scorer in the Ere Divisie.

    Last season it was Suarez........

    Coincidence!?!

    ReplyDelete
  144. England to be fair were shit in the last world cup but in previous world cups youse have always been one of the best teams. You always end up meeting an eventual finalist or winner and seem to lose on penalties. I think youse are a bit too harsh on yourselves and majorly harsh on your managers sometimes.

Also hes picking keepers from relegation teams cuz theres no one else to pick from, unless you count Almunia.

Was Rooney outve position? I didn't think so at the time but I could be wrong.

I think if youse laid of the team and the manager youse would do a lot better. But in saying that I think the German press were slating their team before the world cup and they ended up being the best team in the tournament - Spain were a one-man team.

    ReplyDelete
  145. You're right about the slating, Rod, but it's just the English way I suppose. These players are paid a fortune and we're always hearing (mostly from them) how great they are, etc, etc. It's not too much to ask that these highly paid, top of the pile professionals to get a result against the likes of the USA and Algeria.
As for the finals of tournaments, I thought we did well in the WC with Bobby Robson and the EC when it was in England, the rest was just the usual decision against us or out on penalties exit that we all have come to dread and is now embeded in the national physcie.

I had absolutly zero expectations for the last WC, I thought the team selection and balance of the team was all wrong. (Hart was by far the most consistant GK over the season yet the choice still went out to Green and then the relegated James) Yet I was still dissapointed at the fact that we didn't even turn up. the highpoint was a 10 minute period against the Germans (who I agree were the best team) in which we pulled a goal back and had one disallowed, boo hoo for us, once again a contriversual decision has knocked us out, papering over the truth that we were absolutly abysmal.

I hope Capello finally starts doing what he promised and starts rebuilding the team for the future. Calling up players for their first cap at the age of 30 is plain ridiculous and even though I think Becham has been a great servant to the England team, he's had his inings, if he still wants to be involved then it should only be in a coaching capacity.

Come on Fab, get it right, paison.

Well, if Bendy had the same number of goals as kuyt in the season before he joined us that might not be too bad. Seeing as we completely fucked him up as a striker ever since, comparisons with dirk 'the hardworker' kuyt, would not be something a striker should be writing home about.

  184. From the Denmark game -
Nicklas Bendtner shot wide for the home team in the fourth minute before Agger put them in front.
    ---------------------------------------------

Comparisons with Kuyt and Ngog not remiss then. Piss taking aside, he did score a fine goal to get the gunners back in the game against Ipswich, and seems to do just fine in the Cups.

Srar, Bendy can score from a wide range of angles, it's just when he's right in front of goal he seems to struggle. ;p

  190. Didn't see the England game last night. I can get away with choosing the PL over the Ere Divisie, but Oranje takes precidents when it comes to internationals.

Plus it wasn't being broadcasted on one of the billion or so channels I have.
